Stuck choke tube

fingers

5 year old buck +
I have a choke tube seized up in a Browning A5. I'm planning to soak in a penetrating oil and wondering if anyone knows of an oil that won't damage the paint finish on the outside of the barrel?

Thanks in advance

Blaster or Kroil should work. I wonder if putting it in the freezer over night might help.

If you don't have a good wrench, get one.

If you do have a good wrench, fire several rounds to warm up the barrel, and try with a good wrench, and maybe even a pipe over the wrench handle to give you more leverage.

Sure it's rust. Wd-40 is an ok penetrating oil, not the best. But its easy on finishes.

Get a really hot wet towel, put it on the outside of the barrel. Take a can of duster, turn it upside down. Spray a shot or two inide the barrel. Tube shrinks, while hot rag keeps barrel warm. Use a small tiny adjustable wrench on the choke wrench. Use a wooden 2 jaw clamp where the barrel has some mechanical advantage. Like the magazine tube hole. Can add a rag or two between the wooden clamp.

Differential heat works better without oil. oils transfer heat more. You can put a bit of paper towel in the barrel to keep the liquid duster from cooling the barrel directly.

I just put it in the freezer and will try that first. If that doesn't work, I'll try heat next.

I broke 1 of the 4 plastic tabs on the choke wrench that came with the gun...still works but even less torque before the tool pops out. I ordered a Carlson steel wrench that gets here in a few days.

Appreciate all the tips and suggestions

Heat gun.

Hate to say i've not only used a heat gun, but also a torch on barrels, though they were NOT nicely blued barrels. Purchased several police trade in shotguns that had the chokes thread locker'd in with some black tar like goop, and that was the only way to get them out.

The overnight sit in the freezer didn't work, heating with a hair dryer didn't work....it's sitting in an overnight bath of 3in1 penetrating oil and will report back...

I wouldn't mess with it until you have a proper wrench.

I'll give it a test with the broken wrench tomorrow...if no go then back into oil bath and new wrench scheduled to arrive Monday

Blaster is the best there is

Browning A5. ..paint finish

RE-reading this, I now realize you mean the "new" A5 and the (probably) hydro-graphic finish. That certainly changes things.

I would plug the muzzle, then stand it up and get a couple inches of PB Blaster down there.

(I prefer Kroil, but it's too expensive for high volume use, this might not be TOO bad. 1/3-1/2 a can)

No luck with the half day soak in 3in1 oil and the old wrench. Its back soaking waiting on new wrench tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I'll switch to PB.

The 3in1 penetrating oil was reasonably priced and the container was right sized for dunking the barrel into. By submerging the end of the barrel in the container, I figured the oil could seep in from both ends of the choke tube.

I'm surprised how seized up the threads are. I had that choke tube out 2 weeks ago, but I guess a couple days of travel and doves and ducks took its toll. I'll be lubing the threads from now on.

Does anyone put a tiny dab of anti-seize on their choke tubes or is that a no-no?

Use the silver never sieze, not the copper one. Copper can make thing corrode.

Used to use motor oil or regular gun oil. Take it out every year.

Do alot of shooting? Check the tightness with a wrench from time to time instead of cranking it on tight. Remington's hoke wrench is pretty nice. IF I recall carlson's was good too.

Several companies sell products specifically for that, whether it's just grease or anti seize I coudn't say.

I tend to keep mine lubed, though most that I use are extended chokes. I seem to have more trouble with them being loose rather than not coming out. But that's another benefit to extended, you can see they're loose, plus they're easy to "exercise" to keep free.
