Striped June ripening 2 weeks earlier than normal

Native Hunter

5 year old buck +
It had a lighter than usual crop this year and I wonder if that contributed to them being a little early. I wish this apple tasted as good as it looks, but it doesn't.:)

That is a nice looking apple. How is it for disease resistance?

Absolutely great for DR. Almost no leaf spots and almost no FB. I noticed two small limbs with FB this year and it stopped when it got to last year's growth. Some years you will see no FB at all even when trees next to it show some.

The apple is tart and mealy. I'm going to give some to my mom this year and let her try them as a cooking apple.

If you want to research that Apple, it is also known as "Margret."

A June bearing apple? You gotta be kidding me! Thats awesome!

Is this anythint like Beauty of Bath? Search it on youtube Stephen Hayes talked about how all the old timers asked for it but when he grew it no one wanted it because it was that bad. Lol...

I think perhaps that the strongest point of Striped June is that it's an early ripening apple. When it's been so long since you ate one off of a tree, it's nice to do it even if it isn't the best tasting one you grow. I think if this apple ripened at the same time as Priscilla, I would probably top work it and just have another Priscilla.:)

If beauty can be in the eye of the beholder, I guess taste can be in the mouth of the taster.

Son came in for a visit today, and we walked through the yard. First he loads up on sweet mulberries. Then he moves on to the first blackberries that are beginning to ripen. I warn him that they may seem tart since he has just eaten the sweet mulberries. He polishes off every one off the ripe blackberries and never says a word.

We move to Striped June and I warn him how tart these apples are. He grabs one off the tree and eats it peel and all right down to the core. I ask, "How was it?"

He says, "That's a good apple. Nothing wrong with it at all.":)

I just picked him a bunch and bagged them up for him to take home...LOL.

His mom then reminded me of how she used to buy him Granny Smith from the grocery and how he loved them...makes sense now.
