The one that we are dealing with now is moving a production line to Poland. That company has facilities all over the globe and that location was under utilized, so the project moved there. These projects are long lived and have 10+ years of production, so moving makes sense in some instances.Do you know of companies that off shored work to high wage areas of Europe? I don't..doesn't seem to make any sense, most of the exodus from late 80's until mid 2000's was all to east Asia, from what I've seen. Going to be a giant labor increase to bring that back.
If the product was a consumer part with a short life cycle, it would make no sense to move as it would be difficult to save enough to justify the moving expense. The tariffs will change those calculations though, so I'm expecting to see significant movement back to the US if the tariffs stick. It will start first with companies that have facilities here that have capacity to do work that is currently being done overseas. The big wins will come when new programs scheduled to start several years down the road overseas will be moved to the US instead. Time will tell if the tariffs stick around long enough to have the intended long term gains.
