Thanks guys. I would call our fruit set on apples this year "about average." At blooming time I was expecting it to be above average, but now I can see that it has leveled out pretty normal.
Most of my cultivars are highly disease resistant, but I do grow 3 or 4 varieties that are either prone to CAR and/or FB. I see some minor issues with those tree already, but it looks like neither is going to be a big problem this time. At my farm, I planted one Southern Crabapple just for experimentation. That variety is known for CAR problems, but I wanted to see how it would handle it here. That tree is showing more CAR than any other variety I have, but it has a nice fruit set this year, and I'm anxious to see how it fares this season.
The DR varieties that I grow are pretty much spotless right now and looking great.
I planted some new (to me) varieties of pears and apples this spring, and they have taken off well - Sundance Apple, Becton Pear, William's Pride Apple, and a few others.
We have gone back into a cold, rainy spell right now. Yesterday we had small hail about the size of a pea or less. I couldn't believe it - parts of my yard were white looking, and on my deck it piled up as high as the water hose in some places. But, everything seems to be fine this morning.
As I said recently, "With as many problems as we can have, I sometimes wonder how we are ever able to grow anything."
Best wishes as your crops develop this year.
