It's just a wild crab I found growing on my land. I've numbered all my wild crabs so that I can keep track of them and see how they produce.

There are quite a few apples. Each tree must be a seedling as some are ‘bird crabs’ and some are just a bit bigger, maybe up to 5/8 inch at most. The tree is more like a big shrub. They are not completely hardy here. Some will die back or die completely this winter.

I hope you don't lose those Morse crabs, Bur. Every bit of food helps the critters. The 1/2" - 5/8" crabs we have at camp still attract deer to eat the low-hanging ones and the drops. And the grouse love 'em too.

My DropTine crab from NWC just has a couple left as of yesterday. A few weeks ago when I looked at it there were around ten left, it's only the third year I've had it in the ground it had a little over twenty quarter size apples this year.
How do you like that Droptine tree H20Fowler? and how old is it? I planted several of those along with some 30/06 trees last winter and they are certainly aggressive growers for me.

A few pages back I read reference to dolgo graft vs dolgo seedling being different. I was under impression these grew true as seedlings, was that wrong?
I planted 100 of them dolgo seedlings from county sale last year, just wondering if I'm gonna end up with same thing as common apple seedlings (which are slightly cheaper)?

Northbound, i would expect some variation in fruit size, fruit shape, coloring and drop time. If the seed source was carefully crossing dolgos to dolgos, then probably more uniform in shape, size and coloring but probably still variation in ripening and drop times. I would think all that variety is a good thing.

I believe Sandbur has a batch of Dolgo seedlings at his place planted ......... and I think he grafted some too. He can probably give some insight as to what to expect. Can you chime in Bur ???

I really like it. I bought two of each DropTine/30-06/Ten Point and some of their full size apples three years ago, I was impressed with the root structure and how well they took off. Because of the location I planted them at I couldn't baby them much that first year and they did fine, they are in a CRP strip that I have along the woods...they only get pruned in spring and no more love throughout the year and seem to be growing great. This was the first year they made some apples, they are probably 6'-7'ish tall now. I ordered more for this spring to put out in my shrub strips at the other farm.
Terry at NWC said he didn't think they would be offering the Ten Point this year, they have a new earlier red crab that fruits even heavier that they will be selling.

Here is a dolgo seedling that I am going to collect scion from . I think I will call it the Buckman Crab. It is still holding the fruit that I could not reach for cider.

My grafted dolgo s average about half that size and they drop fruit about Sept 1.
Next to the above dolgo seedling is another dolgo seedling that has what I call bird crabs. Maybe 1/2 inch in size.

I know nothing about purchased common apple seedlings, but I wish I had planted 100 dolgo seedlings about 20 years ago. Bird crabs can be topworked into the Deer sized crabs if you wish.

Do those Dolgo seedling trees get tall ?? How big are they ?? That Buckman crab looks like a winner !!

Do your dolgo seedling trees look fairly simular. Shape, bloom time ect? Most of the one's I planted are for wildlife so some variation is good. However I did line our future camp driveway with them. Some uniformity would be ideal in that situation from a landscaping perspective.
