Hi I found this small tree or shrub growing out of the bank of a small streamin the woods. The Leaves are glossy green, it was flowering around October 1st, and its growth looks like a large bunch of privet. Any ideas!?! Location is eastern Virginia

I know very little about Sweetbay Magnolia, because it doesn't grow here. However, it is native to Virginia. Not sure that's it, but look it up and see what you think.

With the dark leaves and the bud form, looks quite a bit like a camellia to me. Much like with roses there are hundreds if not thousands of varieties with some having simpler flowers and others more complex (petal count). Can't swear it by the pictures, but a camellia of some sort would be my guess.

Thanks native hunter! It looks close everything I read matches except the toothed edge leaf and flowering time. bigbendmarine i think your right! I looked them up and i think its a sasanqua camellia looks exactly the same, and flowering time is winter.
