Slap ya mama

rogersb

5 year old buck +
I sprayed about 20 fruit trees trunks with white paint, put some slap ya mama on them, then did a light spray over it so it sticks. Last year was the first year I had any mouse/vole issues and they killed 5 trees. Tomorrow I'll put on the window screen i bought.

One of the main ingredients is cayenne, anyone else ever try this? I have heard about using it as a dog repellent where needed.1284.jpg

I haven't used it like you've done, but I buy 1 lb containers of cayenne and sprinkle it around large pumpkins we don't want squirrels eating.

I use cayenne to keep rabbits from eating my garden, works well, but must replace after rain. If that stuff sticks to paint may last indefinitely. Maybe leave one without screen and see how it works on its own and let us know a year from now. Nice of me to sacrifice your trees for my future needs, it's Christmas you should give. Ha

Would watering round the tree this time of year help? Make the soil more solid and harder for the voles to dig? I did it the year after I saw problems, but clearing out grass was probably the real thing that did it.

How about mixing ground cayenne in the paint?
I thought about getting a small can and mixing it but the spray, dash of seasoning, then spray seemed easier.

Did you have aluminum screens on the trunks of the trees that were killed last year?

No. I've been planting trees for about 8 years and never even had one nibbled on.

Our camp is about 1 1/2 hours west of Luzerne Co. We planted apple & crab trees years ago without screens on the trunks - lost 'em all to rodents. Then, we planted new apple and crab trees but put aluminum window screen on the trunks and we've had no problems. I can give details on how I install the screens if you'd like - I don't wrap them tight, to allow for trunk growth & expansion. PM me if you want the details, rogersb.

Man, I have screen on most of mine, but not all. I better get out there and get the rest taken care of. I keep the grass pretty short though….

Screen is going on, I already bought it the same day as the paint.
