Sawtooth oaks

I’ve been fooling with some sawtooth oaks for three years and so far for my location I’m rather unimpressed. Top die back on two potted 5-6’ trees I planted out of three in the yard. Pretty high mortality rate of direct seeded acorns planted in tubes with weed mats granted we did have a pretty bad drought last summer and even this spring was dry. I’ve had much better survival with several different species of native oaks I’ve planted for sure. I’m not completely abandoning sawtooth’s but they don’t seem to be particularly well adapted to my location in SE Kansas.

Thanks. What part of the country are you in?

Winters can be hard on Sawtooth oaks. We don't have harsh winters here where I am in GA, but late frosts have caused some top kill for mine as well as with my Dunstan chestnuts.

SE Kansas zone 6b maybe 7a depending on chart you look at
