Rye Only in LC mix

How much rye would you put in a version of the LC mix if you were using rye only?

Is it too soon to plant the LC mix today in south-central Wisconsin?

I mean without oats.

I'd plant 75-100# of WR per acre, if I was skipping the oats. Today, 8/6/16, is not too soon...a week or two earlier than optimal, at most. If you have reasonable deer numbers, and not too much ag competition, they'll keep it mowed for ya. If you have lower deer numbers and lots of ag around, waiting two or three weeks might be better.

We used 2 bags-100 to 112lbs./ac. Pretty much just doubled the rye weight. Worked great on our sand. We could likely count on spotty germination due to weather, some seed loss to birds and critters, or both. We tried both wheat and oats. Oats were dead or dying by the first week in October and wheat just did not do as well on our low pH beach.

My rye has been thinner than I prefer in recent years. So this year I'm going with a rate of around 180 lbs an acre. I surface broadcast and have crappy soil therefore my germination rate is not the best.

As has been posted on our previous website, it might be best to seed your rye at a lower rate, several times about every 2-3 weeks through fall. That will keep something in your plots at optimum maturity for a long time.

Have you or anybody else tried this, what happened in the spring? Did the entire stand of rye "start on equal ground" in the spring and go to seed at the same time or different times?

I usually plant it a 75-100# but mix it with oats so if you were doing a straight rye 100-150# wouldn't be bad.

Did they run out of oats in Wisconsin ???? The oats are an important part of the attraction. If you decide to leave out the oats just put on double the rye.
