Rubbing tree project

So I still have time to try this for this season?

Yes. I don't see any action on mine until early October.

J-bird,
It will be interesting to see how the deer react to the PVC planted post. I don't think their going to like it but I could be wrong.

Seems to me the tree will spin and move which isn't natural. It may freak them out.

Bill. The PVC is driven into the ground and is nearly flush with the surface so it should not bother the deer at all. I have some wood screws thru the pipe and into the sapling to keep it from turning and being pulled out......hopefully. I hope it will take a pretty good thrashing as it is - if not I will step up my game next time.

I put up 2 today.

One in the plot.

The other on the trail near my best stand.

Can we make a list of the different tree species everyone uses and the benefits?

Looks like poplar and cedar, what else and why?

I put one up last year and it was visited by every deer in the neighborhood. Was going to put up another yesterday but I forgot to take the post hole digger. Maybe I will get it tomorrow.

Me too. I installed 2 last year, only put a camera on one of them. The one with the camera got POUNDED to death (literally). Every deer within a mile visited that tree at some point.

Here is a seasons' worth of photos from one of my rubbing posts last season:

Mine are basswood. I use it because it a piece of worthless wood.

G&G - deer in my area like trees that have the bark peel easily, produce lots of sap or otherwise have a smell to them. They also like softer wood stuff as well. I think deer will rub just about anything to be honest. If given the choice deer in my area prefer pines, cedars and basswood just off the top of my head. The ones I put up I will have to look and see to be honest - I didn't figure it would really matter all that much (I added the scent rope to assist in holding the scent as well)

That is an awesome video. How many different bucks were there?

I'm on my way up to the ranch shortly. I know what I will be doing tomorrow morning. Cool video John!!
Question is, what will you be doing at the ranch tonight? A little grillin' n swillin' maybe?;)

I've only used poplar but I was just thinking that a nice sized tag alder would work very good too. I see them shredded all the time. I think I'll put a tag alder in next week.

Haha, that sounds like a great time! Now you have the wheels spinning, but I've been swamped at work lately and we have the granddaughters at the house 4 to 5 days a week while mom and dad are working.

I'll be honest, I have no idea. Lots. None of the bigger ones were spotted from a stand :(

First time with tapatalk.

They have been really busy since 10/1 with the licking rope.

Pic heavy, but everyone likes pics, right?
