Removing stake and Cages what size / age.

5 year old buck +
Just came in from cleaning up cages and stake ties. Wondering when it's time to let them go on their own? No stake and ditching the large cage in favor or a trunk guard cage.

Either you're hardcore, or you aren't getting the 6"+ snow storm that we're getting on the other side of Lake Champlain!

Had a little snow on my way to work the other morning.

Trees coming in probably weds or thursday. going to camp tp put them in. 8 bareroots, and 2 I dug up at home. Want to move a kerr, but the buds are waking up.

I don't know if I'm crazy or not. But after 2-3 growing seasons I'm ditching the big cages. Need to utilize them elsewhere. I use 4ft welded wire fence around 16" in diameter as a rub guard.

Bark has to be real bark and not smooth skin type of bark before ill let window screen come off. At about the same time is when I'll take the big cage off and replace it with a smaller diameter one. I trust our deer and small mammals to sabotage anything I let my guard down on.

Be wary of going to a little cage. This is a 5 year old kieffer that is probably toast.

What did you do to piss that deer off? Lol That is crazy though. I haven't had any issues yet but it's only been a year or two. Thats sucks!

What size cage did you have on that tree? How tall and what diameter?

Thinking putting in a rubbing post at the corners of your plots / orchards is a really good idea. Caught a buck just starting to rub a 5ft spruce tree this fall. Threw a cage on it when I saw it it.

I have put similar smaller cages around 3-4-year-old trees. A buck tried to rub one of my chestnuts that had the smaller cage. The way I look at it is I want it to be difficult for them to rub the tree. If a 150-200 pound animal hopped up on testosterone with nothing but time on his hands wants to rub a tree, he is going to find a way to do it if he really wants to do it. I can make it difficult for him, but I don't think I can make it impossible if he really wants to do it.

I also put cages around after removing tubes but they are usually about a foot bigger all the way around.Don't use the spiral guards as I have had them grow right into the tree

I asked that earlier and someone replied, never!

It was a 4 foot tall cage, I’m not sure on the diameter but it wasn’t big enough. For these smaller cages, I’ve since doubled a few up which should be a better deterrent. Or just leave on the original 5’ tall cage for the life of the tree.

I guess it depends what your protecting against. If you have bears in your area, I’d think the cage should be permanent. I’ve wondered the same thing with oak trees and tubes. I’ve planted ~300 so far and wondered if any one slips the tubes off after they reach 8’ + out of browse height. The tubes are expensive so would be nice to be able to reuse them.

Gotta have deer to have these problems. 😆

I want to plant nut trees to get more squirrels.
Any mulberry or hickory trees on the property. Clearance those trees a bit. A few apples on M7 or G890 would bring them around. AN apple rochard paid me to take out their squirrels like 15 years ago. Their daughter was the terminator lady actor in terminator 3.

Maples, maples, maples.... maples, junk, maples... couple hemlocks, maples, maples....
On the plus side, if you cut it, maples are great browse!
