Reduced recoil loads

bigboreblr

5 year old buck +
Anybody knocker their canon down a notch?

Replacing the scope on my browning BLR 450 marlin. Loaded up some 300gr pills with a starting charge of IMR4227. Also bought a mercury filled recoil reducing tube. Went with the heavy 16oz one. For the weekend stuff the hole in the stock with fishing weights and socks. Worked well on my 450 bushmaster.

Thinking I am going to match the 450 marlin with my Thompson center omega, velocity / trajectory wise. Been a few years since I measured the velocity. But, it was around 1750fps. 240gr Hornady xtp .430". Come out to 1630 ft-lbs. 1700 fps at 300 grains is 1940 ft-lbs. My 150gr 308 at 2350 fps is 1840 ft-lbs.

Went from a Bushnell elite 3200 1.404.5x32 to a Burris skulltac 1-6x30 red dot / scope hybrid thing. Clear as wabeshaw ice. Very generous with keeping in focus. both eye relief and being off center.

Contacted hogdon, they gave me some recommendations. I can also use a 250gr Barnes all copper. Should be using those in NY public land anyways. Technically my clubs 650 acres is in the stillwater tract. A 100 year lease to the paper company, they sublet to us hunters for "public" recreation. Had these 300gr pills loaded from the summer. Might as well dump em out.

I’ve been an avid reloader for a long time and I used to really work on getting the best combination of accuracy and velocity for each individual rifle and load …but I also really enjoy tinkering. I’m guilty of loading a Ruger number one in 45/70 to low end 458 Win Mag levels with a 400 or 405 grain bullet at 1900 fps and then downloading a CZ Safari 458 win mag with 350 grain bullets to around 2300 fps. A 350 grain Barnes TSX in a 458 win mag is actually pretty impressive. I’ve only shot one deer with the Win Mag during an antlerless hunt. It was with a 350 grain hornady interlock round nose that was loaded to a moderate 45/70 level load. In my opinion as long as you’re using safe and accurate loads following proper procedures you should do what’s enjoyable for you.

Got a disc in my neck that's bad. Few years ago, was hesitant to do surgery. Went back this year and he wasn't interested in even doing cortisone shots. Just physical therapy. Had to give up auto racing and snowmobiling so I don't end up in a wheelchair.

Shooting it later today. Stuffed 1lb of lead in the stock with socks and replaced the scope last night. Stuffed closwe to 2lbs of lead in a 450 bushmaster single shot. However, that gun shoots 395gr subsonics with 19.5 grains of imr4227. About 1000ft-lb. Recoil is probably lighter than a 30-30.

Not so crazy about accuracy. If I can make soda can groups at 200, Im happy. Don't think I ever shot big game at 200 or more yards ever. Not recalling one. Just want enough bullets to practice. Just whitetail deer, so most bullets are up to the task. 450 marlin, 450 bushmaster, 308, and sometimes the 30-30 goes with me too. I have a 375 H&H CZ that was gifted to me. She shoots one shot of WD-40 down the barrel every year, and that's it.

Have you tried muzzle breaks or suppressors where possible? I was shocked how much a suppressor reduced recoil on a new 30-06.

Suppressors are well suppressed in NY. Progress is banned here.....

Would like a muzzle brake on it. Need it threaded for it. Emailed a guy who specializes in Browning BLR's, no response yet.

I found a practical reason to slow it down too. Matching trajectory of my T/C omega.

I stuffed 16oz of fishing weights in the stock and sighted in the new scope today. Not bad at all. Used to not shoot at the bench at all with that gun 10-15 years ago. MY shoulder was feeling the recoil, but no pain. Shot 16 rounds today. Before I'd stop at 3, that was before my car accident with my disc in my neck too.

I swapped guns to let the barrel cool down some to get a finishing group. It was a little sloppy, some vertical stringing as the barrel warmed up. Left to right was about 1.5 inches. The factory 325gr flextip were almost clover leafs with the old Bushnell scope at 100. Going to try some new loads that hogdon advised. PRobably got half the powders the recommended to try. H335, AA1680,IMR 3031. I thought I bought reloader 10x for this gun, cant find the recipe. Anybody with reloading manuals have any 1700-1900fps 300gr loads in their books?

Wasn't;'t that happy with groups, but was real happy being able to shoot that gun on the bench again.

Not helpful for all those big bore owners but I find it easier to just shoot cartridges that don’t thump ya too bad on the back end from the start.

I used to shoot primarily magnums and got myself pretty good at managing recoil and not anticipating it too much. Went away from magnums for a few years and had to practice with a smokeless muzzleloader a fair bit this year. It took a while to get myself better with the recoil again!

I should probably sell the gun. But, its an old friend of mine. Been in the woods about 2 decades. Not sure if the Thompson center omega harvested more or not, but shot the most deer of any center-fire for sure.

New Chrono wouldn't wake up today, so not sure of the speed. Batteries were used ones. But, I slow it down a bit more, I'll be happy with it.

Browning makes quality stuff. Next rifle either a Browning x-bolt in 308 or a 44 mag Winchester 1893 to replace the 450 marlin if needed. Maybe a rossi. Winchesters are too nice for what I do in the woods with em. Waited a year debating the 450 bushmaster or a 44 mag lever gun.

Sounds like all you need is a .30 30 or a .350 Legend
