Red Delicious

The Franklin (not Franklin Cider) I got from Turkey Creek has a few apples on it this year it’s the first apple tree to fruit in my larger wildlife orchard. And look at the number of tubes in the background of that photo.
I just saw this post you might need to do some fertilizing. Franklin (not the cider apple grows like gangbusters for me) That tree doesnt look like it has nearly the growth I would expect. Granted all soils are different, but if you aren't getting at least 18" of new growth all all branch tips on that size of tree you are probably deficient of possibly your pH is hindering up take.

Maybe not the best pie tree, but empire is a good general use apple with some bite. My wife likes to mix both soft and firmer apples together in a pie.

I have to see how bad the scab gets at home, but granny smith is a nice blend of disease resistance, late dropping, decent storing, and good taste too Ripens mid november here in zone 5/6 NY close to a large river. Wondering if there's something not to like about it because it's talked about very little on here. Seems to be easy to find locally too at nurseries. Not a fan of customer service or shipping from willis orchards in Georgia, but hat where mine came from. Decent rootstock and seedling selection though.

Turkey creek is a very good place to order from. Good customer service, nice roots on the trees, good packaging, and seems like he takes good care of the trees. Nice little selection to choose from and you know what rootstock you're getting. Don't be afraid to try M7 rootstocks, although not talked about alot on here.

I do wish he had a good late crabapple or two to his varieties.

I through each tree a bit of triple 10 in the spring but have never fooled with a soil test maybe I should.

We are waiting to see drop time on one of our latest trial trees. Last year was its first to bare fruit. I didn’t keep good records last year as it was the 1st year. It shows a little spotting from CAR this year, but not terrible and conditions were great for CAR this year. Seems to hold very well into later Fall.

Two tractor bucket loads of apples dumped for the deer mostly from one of my red delicious trees. Young Kiefer pear in the fore ground and doe sneaking in from the left. Temp_1732289-20250923000416-100MFCAM_MFDC2655.jpeg

Or if you want a great wildlife tree and a decent eater you can go with Hawkeye, it is one of the parent trees for Red Delicious. Mine is loaded this year, fruit is as clean as it can be from a bug perspective and the tree has no disease weakness.
I got a Hawkeye from you & it’s planted in Iowa. I look forward to seeing how it does !

Our parent tree was absolutely loaded with apples this year its a 7 year old tree and probably 20' tall. It has been dropping apples for a week and I would say it probably has 50% of its crop still hanging.

Grabbed another apple from it today as I walked by. Sweetness has definitely increased. I think another positive to Hawkeye is that it tends to have a thicker skin than many apples, that thicker skin lends itself to less physical damage from hail and insects, which often turn into rot spots. Looking at all the apples still hanging today they are probably some of the cleanest apples out of any variety I grow.

For those in the north country, I have observed that Noran has a thicker skin. I also like the taste.

This thread is subconsciously trying to get me to buy more Apple trees. I live on Hawkeye drive, which was once an orchard owned by the brother of the guy who popularized the Empire apple via Rutgers. I grew up making pies from Empire apple seconds because I didn't like red delicious.

What the Hell, how much more direct can I be. Inventory on our website will be updated and available for purchase starting Oct 1st! LOL
I wouldn't ever eat a Red Delicious even if homegrown, there is dozens of other better tasting apples.

I cannot argue this fact they do taste poorly I usually try to eat a couple a year because my tree is very productive and after a couple bites I’m done with them and they get tossed into the deer apple pile.

It did but Rutgers helped commercialize/popularize it was the story I was told.

EDIT: So it sounds like the story details were a little off. Joe Way owned the orchard where I now live.
