Questions on Red Osier Dogwood

For any of you guys who have planted cuttings or bare root ROD, does it only grow in wetter areas - or will it grow in regular moist soil that drains well ?? How about thinner mountain soil with some sand in it ??

Q- #2 - after say 5 years, what does it look like as far as growth pattern ?? ( bushy, how tall, etc. )

Q- #3 - Do deer browse it in your area and how does it take browsing pressure ??

I read up on ROD, but some of the info varies on it - so I thought I'd ask you guys that have it and actually see what it does and how it fits into a habitat plan. THANKS in advance.

My friend has a large marsh full of ROD. It seems to be the dogwood that likes water the best. I just took cuttings last year, not sure how they did. In this marsh of thousands of shoots, you have to look hard for one that is not browsed. They all bounce back, maybe even thicker from browsing. I would say they are about 4-5ft tall and bushy in the summer. I bought yellow twig dogwoods that were potted a few years ago and they have done great in regular non-lowland soil. I take 50+ cuttings off these three plants a year. They spread to about 12ft wide and 5ft high. I also have silky dogwoods that have done good in normal soil, but they don't seem to browse them as much as the ROD. Grey dogwoods are doing really good on my land in NW WI. They get 5-6ft tall and either the bears or deer love the white berries in the fall. They seem to do good in drier soil, not sure about the browsing.

I have seen it in so many different habitats. U see it in a swamp, on sandy soil field edges, next to old barn foundations....

This past spring I added it to our property in three places; in a low lying damp area to add some diversity and interest, at the top of our meadow for a similar reason, and in some woods openings along our skid trail to provide a little browse and interest.....

It's doing fine in all three locations.... I should have protected it better but it's battling the weeds and browse just fine. I'll be adding more in the spring. Planning on tucking it in to fallen tree tops to help the browse issues.
