So you have a nice apple graft, you put it in its final resting place, alum screen, build up some dirt, put some plastic down, rock around. Then a few weeks later a bud from the root stock you missed wakes up.

How do you go about deleting such but without ruining the masterpiece? :)

I wouldnt have made it look that nice on a fresh graft. :) Just saying. You could make a cylinder out of poultry wire for the summer, easy off and on for maintenance purposes.

It is hard to care and protect grafts planted out. Mine are inside an electric fence the mostly keeps deer out and it is well mowed deter voles and rabbits. I use plastic mesh tubes from Ben Meadows and get my weed mats down before they get going much. I waited to screen until later in the summer if it was a good graft and put a small cage on them. The failures were t-budded and left it in the mesh tube over winter.

I split my trees this year between planting out and in a new backyard nursery. I do like digging small holes and have the tree in its final location but regrafting was a pain last year. Based on what is happening in my nursery now, I am hopeful I won't have to regraft much.

Yeah I won't have to regraft much either, 3 trees were put at my moms house, but I had to make them look nice. Just so happens the root stock on 1 decided to throw another bud, not the end of the world, just more work.

I add an open tree tube to the 1/4 inch mesh cage to shade the graft and protect it fromd rying south winds. the window screen goes on one year later.

Maybe I've had a little to much rum here tonight, but what do you mean by, " bud from the root stock you missed wakes up." ? Is the rootstock trying to grow another leader? Rub it off w/ your finger.

OK, I need to go make another drink!

Bite the bullet, take it all apart and start over. With a future plan for access.

BV Apple grafts are not supposed to be perfect lol. Take that target off your back and let Maya drink in peace. He is now questioning how much he is drinking because of you lol.
