Pre Deer Camp 2025

5 year old buck +
We’re starting a new tradition of Pre Deer Camp as a way to enjoy the camaraderie of deer camp while building excitement for the coming season while getting help with some of the chores related to the season.

Thursday night we reviewed last September's camera data and compared it to this years movements. Today we set up for the evening's neighborhood deer coop meeting, then focused on preparing shooting lanes, setting up blinds and tweaking our archery equipment at the new home range.

In the deer camps, leases, hunting clubs of the Deep South, we called it Work Day.

Day two has us placing a new blind, cutting shooting lanes, checking out acorns, killing wasps and adding accessories such as hooks and shelves to the blinds. Psychologically, calling this deer camp makes more than a work day in this 99 degree weather according to the weather channel. Our thermometer shows the outside temp as 103.5 in the shade.

The white oaks look to be producing acorns well again.

Always nice to have the right piece of equipment available to help move heavy things.

Cutting shooting lanes with two people is much easier than one!

This five panel blind has five shooting lanes while maintaining good concealment.
The creek below the blind will help with thermals.

Day three saw us putting up a metal tower with soft sided blind at the cabin. I also turned some storm debris into firewood and broadcast seeds for the fall plot on the hope of rain this coming week.

Day 4. The closing hour of Pre Deer Camp. We accomplished about 80% of what we set out to do, plus hosted the annual neighborhood deer coop, Day one found us clearing trails. Then we placed two tower blinds and two ground blinds, cutting shooting lanes for each. For the new blinds we put together four new (cheap) office chairs for the blinds, then cleaning the old blinds and added new permethrin tags for each, along with some additional hanging hooks, cupholders and shelves that will make the blinds more usable. We then went to the cabin property. Step one was cutting storm debris for firewood, then I broadcast the final food season at the cabin property (and enjoyed .61" of rain the following night after six weeks of drought). We sighted in several rifles and bows, however, this went slower than anticipated and we didn't finish. There remains some shooting lane work. Nor did the game cams did get serviced (cleaning lenses, fresh batteries, checking straps). That said, 80% is more than 0% and I was glad to have help getting the work done.

With the sunrise, a new "Pre-Deer Camp" tradition comes to an end and Deer Season 2025 begins!
