The in-ground bags make care over the summer a breeze. I make a mound of dirt all around the little tree about 6 inches high by scraping up surrounding dirt so as to make a little pond on top of the in-ground bag. This I can fill with water (a couple of gallons at a time) with the hose very quickly and by the time I'm done with the last tree in line I can start over so they are all drinking 5 gallons (approx) per watering session. This might be late summer when all is dry. Early spring you'll probably be done around a gallon of water at a time.
If you have to leave for 10 days at a time - not a problem - water the snot out of 'em and pile on the mulch before you go! I seriously don't think you can overwater unless you have drainage problems.
The in-ground bags are not reusable. By the time I transplant out of the nursery I have roots all trapped in the mesh. I cut the bag off and slice any stubborn roots holding in the mesh. Remember, the constriction of root forces a "branching" back up the root stem away from the bag. They are smart that way. I've transplanted after 2 years in a nursery and the roots in the bag were tremendous but some trimming out at the mesh in no way harms or shocks the little tree. Great success this way!
I use the 8 inch bags. That would be the diameter and they are 15 inches high. $3,75 each at roottrapper.com
