It's a rush or sedge of some sort. Sedges have a edges (triangular stem), and rushes are round (round stem). I guess I would start by looking at the stem and try to key it out from there. Some are decent duck food.
That's what it looked like to me also but this picture doesn't do it justice. It's 5-6ft. I could be wrong but I didn't think nut sedge grew to this extreme.

I have seen it grow to several feet tall before - especially near ponds and the like. Not sure I have seen 5 or 6 feet p I have seen 3 or 4 before. Give Native a shout - he will know....if it has roots he seems to be able to ID it! Like was said if it's round and hollow it's a rush, if its triangular shape and sort of waxy I bet its a sedge of some sort.....maybe not the one I listed but a sedge all the same.
