Permethrin on apple trees

I thought I read on one of the threads that someone was using permethrin on their apple trees.
What dosage should be used and is it safe to use after petal fall. I am having a terrible time with Japanese Beetles. I am usingf Sevin now and it is doing a pretty good job.

Todd, never heard of it being used nor is it listed in our tree fruit guide for insects on apples. You can look up the label for any insecticide, fungicide, etc. on line, and see if they are listed for apples. Some insecticides listed for Jap Beetles on apples are Sevin 4f, Sevin 80 Solupak, Sevin xlr, Imidan 70w. Those are just a few, but I do not see permethrin.

OK. Thanks Maya

Todd,

I use it. I only use it on seedlings, not on producing trees. It is very effective against insects and does not harm the tree. I bought mine from keystone and used the mix for ornamental trees. The reason it is not labeled for fruit trees is because you don't want to consume residue on fruit. It is very effective against Japanese beetles. It seems to last longer than sevin. I would not use it on producing trees.

Thanks,

Jack

I wonder how it would work for aphids. I have bottles of permitherin I use to mix up for my tick spray. Maybe I should mix some up for aphids instead of sevin.

For everything that I've used Sevin for, permethrin has worked just as well or better and lasted much longer. Again, I don't generally use it on fruiting trees.

My trees are all young and I'm not expecting fruit on them for a few years so I might have to try this. What mix ratio per gallon are you using?

The first time I used it, I just used a leftover spray can from the aerosol I used for turkey hunting. When I found it worked, I ordered concentrate from Keystone. I used the mix ratio on the label for ornamental trees. I can't recall what it is off the top of my head and my concentrate is at the farm. It seemed to work well.

Thanks,

Jack

Ben Hooper has recommended in the past using permethrin in a white paint/water mixture when trying to prevent sunscald/borers. That may be where you heard it mentioned with apple trees.

Is there anything to spray that will keep worms off apples?
