Pear canker

Duck Creek

A good 3 year old buck
So this is a November Nectar pear tree on ohxf 97 planted spring 2019. Its got some sort of canker rot going on. The rot apears to go al the way down to the soil. The tree looks healthy but it obviously is not. Part of me wants to leave it be since its my only one of that variety. Although I'm thinking it could infect other trees in that orchard. I'm thinking I should cut it down at the base and maybe I'll get a sucker I can graft onto next spring. I'm torn. Should I cut my losses on it or roll the dice and hope for the best?

Are we looking at the Southwest side of the tree?

Yes.

Okay, it’s likely sunscald. It may or may not heal back. It depends on the severity. Regardless of what you decide to do, you need to prevent it from happening again in the future. There are several threads on the subject. Do a search, and you should find all the info you need. Basically it amounts to shading the lower portion from the sun in the winter. Good luck.

Hopefully that's what I'm dealing with. I've taken some precautions in the past but have never had a problem with sun scald. I almost cut it down. Thanks for the input.
