Osage orange trees

Well - not only that, but hedge is hell on a chainsaw chain! I have some BIG hedge on my place they are like a giant shrub more so than a tree because it branches so low. If I cut a few - I will do a side-by-side to see if I can notice any use.

Get a full chisel chain J-bird and keep the rpm's up. I cut hedge almost exclusively and can keep chains as long as when I use to cut oak, elm, and hackberry.

Good luck getting them established. Deer love them and will need to be completely caged in. Must have been fewer deer 100 years ago when all the hedge roes around me where planted.

My property is absolutely covered in them and I am doing everything I can to remove the SOBs. No way I would want to plant more. You rarely see leaves at browse level because they hit them hard. However they are great firewood, and make excellent brush piles for the quail.

Cut them at ground level and do not treat stump with herbicide. That is better than a food plot at keeping deer on your property.

I would never not treat them. I hate those invasive suckers.

All you guys that have too many, feel like digging me a few and selling them?

Sorry, not digging any up.
I just checked to see if there were any hedge apples laying around to send ya some seed... not a single one left. Sorry.

I have tons of seeds, thank you though. I was hoping to get a few saplings a couple years old already.

I'll have to look around. I think most of what I can find right now are probably as big around as your thumb (or bigger) and would be a huge pain to dig. If I can find a couple that are small enough to dig up I'll let you know. With that said you should probably send me a message every once in a while as a reminder...

Probable easier to order through MDC. They sell at cost.

Thank you all!

A gentleman at work says to put a bunch of hedge apples in a bucket and cover with water. Let em rot and mash em a bit. Next spring dig a furrow then just dump the contents from the bucket in the furrow. Claims you will have a row of them very thick.

Very cool! Thanks!
