Old fashioned apple tree pruning

Half of my trail cam pics are like that. If the branch hangs down within 6', not a bud is left!

Native, will they only prune the end/tip of a branch, or will they munch on even older wood within their reach?

It's usually just the tips of the limbs. They will do it any time of the year, but the new buds coming out have them extra interested right now.

Native - I was just up-state to my camp ( 8" of new snow from the latest quick-hitter ) and the deer have nipped the tips of most of our young hawthorns. No thorns on the tips. They've done that for the last year or 2 and it makes the haws push out more limbs and get thicker trunks. The haws are between 18" and 4' tall. Nice looking tree in the pic. Deer also look to be in good shape. Getting green there yet ??

We are beginning to see a little green. Buds are out on lots of trees. I was in south TN a few days ago and it was so green down there it would make your mouth water.

We had bare ground in 90% of our camp area until that last 8" dump. The W. rye and W. wheat were starting to green up and draw deer, but snow's melting pretty quick. Hopefully we're ALL planting & getting dirty soon !! Good luck with your projects, Native.

Thanks and good luck to you too. My fall planted clover is starting to come up and look good. In a few days I will take some pictures and do some updates. Right now I'm working long hours at my job, trying to get ahead a little so I can take some vacation at our turkey season in a little over 2 more weeks.

I know one thing for sure - the next time I retire, I'm not taking a new job the next day...LOL.
