OK spotting scope

bigboreblr

5 year old buck +
Looking for a new spotting scope. LEes say you need to see a 30 cal bullet hole at 200 yards or even better would be 22 cal hole at 200. 1/2 hour before sunset. Got an old bushnell that is pretty scrappy, but works. Probably dont need more than 40x. Likely lower power or fixed would work better. Not spotting elk at 600 yards or even shooting a rifle past 250 really. Probably won't ever go on a hunt, just range work.

Not sure if those 250ish ones will cut the mustard. Any advice, or deals on one you saw?

I bought a Pentax 80mm a dozen years ago, and still a great optic. I have directed helicopters on to animals from some number of miles (12?) with it. I look to the bird watching community for opinions on glass.

Ever use one of those wireless target camera/monitor set ups? Might be the ticket for this.

Or a cheaper scope with a digiscope adapter?

Or a really good friend who can sit near the target?

When I bought my nikon extreme 7x35 binoculars I used birding website for opinions. Saw some like the sv406p scope. Only 167 bucks. Could be ok. Haven't bit at the bait on it yet.

When I shoot, its in a swamp. The targets are put on the edges. Got to drive all the way around and get muddy. Often I just squeeze in a bit of shooting before I leave camp. ATV and everything else is packed up.

That’s a pretty low bar. Sorry, can’t say I’ve looked at relevant models for that type of thing but fixed power does usually mean better optics for the $.

Opticron was a brand I looked at for compact scopes for a good price years ago. Kowa ended up releasing a nice 55mm model so I never bought one but they might have good options under $400?

I’ve seen vortex razor 50mm models listed for $400 on forum classifieds.

Thinking santa may bring a vortex.. Oldest kid loves vortex optics. Seeing a bullethole at 200 isnt a huge workout optics wise.

Depends on many factors and expectations, but I do know that $500 today will get something better than $1000 did 15 years ago.

I have put $500 scopes side by side with $2500 scopes and optically the only thing I see is a different hue. The advantage of the higher price is durability, repeatability, etc.

That warranty is great and all, but what good does it do when you are on the side of a mountain?

Just while i'm target shooting. Like hunting alot, not much aspiration to go out west here. Lots of good times in the woods to be had where I live. Used to play the new hampshire moose lottery for years. Skipped a year and lost my points. Kinda forgot why too.
