Oats or buckwheat ... what would you do?

If you've followed any of my posts you already know I have about an acres worth of food plot trails. I've been working on opening them up to more light this spring. They were planted in the LC cereal grain mix last year (minus the peas). I've got some clover growth but not real thick. The rye is headed out and anywhere from three to five feet tall. I'm mowing it this weekend and plan to use the full LC Mix again this fall. In the areas where the clover is thin I want to broadcast either oats or buckwheat to fill in for both weed control and extra food for the rest of spring and summer. In a couple select spots where I'm hoping to let the clover continue for a couple years I'm also going to throw in some radishes at the end of July just to see what happens. My question is would you broadcast oats or buckwheat after the mowing? I will not be working the soil at all until I disc the clover under in the fall.

I would do a combo of buckwheat, oats and red clover. A couple weeks ago I planted some sunn hemp and added oats, buckwheat and rad clover to it.

I already have a medium red/ladino mix in there. I just want to fill in the thin and empty spots. How much buckwheat and oats per acre in a mix would you use?

Why not try both in order to see which does best in your particular locations ?? Maybe one will do better than the other given the amount of sunlight on your paths, soil moisture, pH, etc. Try some BW in one location, oats in another to compare. Either one will attract deer, but you may learn which works best in those spots.
