Not entirely certain what this one is. I have a guess but would like your opinion. Leafing out much earlier than other oaks.

What about post oak?

I didn't see this earlier Native, but I would say you are spot on given the region you are in and the shape of those leaves. At first glance it looked like it could have been a white species hybrid, but those leaves are distinctively post oak imo.

Thanks wiscwhip.

That's one of the original oaks that was planted about 12 years ago. I only asked for white oak, but what they gave me was lots of different oaks in the white oak family. There was also a bunch of chinkapin oak, which I could easily identify, and I added Bur and Swamp White later on. I'm kind of glad now that they mixed in some different ones. Between reds and whites I have now identified 9 different species. The only thing that has outgrown the oaks is yellow poplar. I've been thinning some of those out the last two years where they are near a nice oak.

Hell of an oak for 12 years!

That ground isn't much for farming but it grows oaks and briers like a charm. I have several more that big and most are close to that big.

Native, have you or are you planning to add any more oaks on your place?

No, any future trees for me will be fruit or conifers. I have lots of young oaks planted now and have several mature native oaks. When everything leafs out I will get a pic of where oaks are mixed with white pine. I like the looks of that area.
