I have no idea. They sure are proud of them though!
IL DNR or Forstery Dept. have a tree purchasing program? I know IN does and I get 100 saplings for like $35. May not be able to get pecan or chinese chestnut, but may be an option for you for the walnut (IN DNR doesn't sell to outside of IN).
You planting for deer, timber ???? Most folks would not plant walnuts for deer is why I ask. Most folks plant walnut for future timber.....like for your grand-kids. If your planting for deer I would stick with oaks and chestnuts.....not familiar with deer use of pecans.....I have never seen a deer eat a walnut. Walnut produce a chemical in their roots to suppress other plant growth around them and as such tend to make poor deer habitat trees as well.

I couldn't leave well enough alone. I didn't read the fine print as to when you have to order, but I do see black walnut and pecan on the list.....and at only $2/tree!!!

as for tree selection, I really do not like idea of managing property solely for deer. I have enjoyed eating fruit off of trees, picking apples and having wife make a delicious applecrisp. The idea of walnuts would be FAR future planning, timber and nut production, for self and family. same as for pecans. Small gm hunting would benefit as well. Thx j bird, ill check the pecan offer. Was hoping for the english walnut. remember as a youth, picking up some nuts at grandparents home. Home gma used to add them to baked goods....sentimental.

Darn I just got a catalog the other day from a small upper Midwest nursery that had English Walnut trees in their catalog. Of course I browsed through it and then chucked it already. Maybe the name will come to me.... maybe

I remembered the other nursery I was thinking of Chief River Nursery in WI. Unfortunately I think I got their catalog and the Gurneys one at the same time and confused where I saw the walnuts. Chief River doesnt have English walnuts

Raintree and ColdStream both have walnut and all kinds of other good nut trees. We do the same as you not just managing for deer, we try and benefit all the wildlife we can.

If you want to grow pecans in western IL, google best pecans for Illinois and read about the differences between pecan trees appropriate for southern states (often called paper shell) and pecan trees appropriate for northern states (harder shell). If you intend to plant only one variety, check to make sure the variety you select is self fertile; many varieties require multiple varieties for pollination.

Stark trees, as well as those sold by IL DNR should probably be appropriate for your area; BUT be sure to research the variety of pecan you want and ask what they have to offer. Good luck.
There are alot better places to buy trees,MDC has some of the best seedlings anywhere and almost every state forestry offers something.There are lots of nurseries that sell fruit trees including the wildlife group.Learn how and what it takes to plant and protect to have the best success or you are wasting your time

thanks j bird. today i picked up 100 swamp white oak, 100 pin oak and 100 pecan. I dont need that many, but the IL DNR sold in lots of 100 that was so easy to buy. Got out to property and was able to get 25 of SWO in ground, along with 25 pecan.
