New Barn Build - 25x36 Pole Barn

That is an awesome barn. Great job!

Something's missing ............... chimney for the wood stove !!!! Working out there in the winter is gonna be C-H-I-L-L-Y. Keep those fingers & toes from turning blue and also have a place to roast a hot dog or 3.

You know it Bowsnbucks! Thinking about a ceiling mount propane heater so I can warm up the barn on cold days quickly, sit around in my shorts and Hawaiian shirt, have a few brews, and do some wrenching on my K10.

Nice framing job, thats alot of work right there. What is the roof pitch 10 or 12/12, put a good vapor barrier under the metal roofs as well.

Thanks Ozark. It's a 10/12 pitch. It was hard to work on, but now that it's up I have absolutely no snow load. I did not do any kind of a vapor barrier under the roof. I just screwed the sheets directly to the purlins. I put in soffit vents and the ridge is vented. I am hoping with adequate air flow and a 1st floor that's well insulated and sealed, that I won't have a huge problem with condensation dripping back into the attic space.

Hey guys...thought I'd so a mid-summer update on my barn build. Work is coming along. I am focusing on the exterior so I can get it buttoned up before the snow flies. Working on all of the trim and batten strips. Got a few entry doors in. Got the openings for the transom windows above each door all framed out. Going to do barn doors on a track on the gable end opening and overhead high-lift doors for the 2 doors in front. Also starting to get some stain on the building.

One of the biggest headaches was trying to figure out how to get the ridge cap on. The roof is a 10/12 pitch and I really couldn't walk on it. Ended up renting a lift.

I found a brand new window on CL for the attic space upstairs. It was 6x5' and weight probably 150 or 200 pounds. Had to get creative on how exactly I was going to get it in myself. Ended up rigging up a pulley and a climbing rope and used my ATV's winch to hoist it into place. Worked perfectly.

Here it is from the attic space and from the outside all buttoned up and trimmed out.

My goal is to get stairs and a small deck to that second floor entry door, garage doors, transom windows, a shed roof off the back wall all up and in place before Thanksgiving. Then I can work on insulation, wiring, and lights throughout the fall and winter.

Hope you enjoy.....

Nice job, the smell of new construction is always a good one.

That does look good! And I wouldn't walk on that roof either.

Natty I am a quite a few steps behind you, but I am hoping to still get mine buttoned up by the time snowflys. Then work on the interior during the winter as well. It really is a lot of work for a weekend warrior.

Looks fantastic! It turned out great.

Lookin' great, Natty. Style fits right in to the New England landscape. Pretty good looking "doghouse" for when the lady of the house is ready to hang you from the highest tree !!!
( I speak from experience ………… ).

The stairs & landing is a GREAT idea. I wish I had a storage spot like that. With heat for winter use, that place will be mighty handy for 4 seasons. Nice work !!

Thanks for the feedback everybody. Appreciate it.

That's funny Bowsnbucks! Thanks for the feedback. I just sent you a PM with some wiring questions. Would love to hear from you before I begin.

Hope all is well!

Just found this thread - totally awesome. Glad you used the lift for the ridge vent, other than using climbing gear, I'm not sure there are other approaches that would be safe.

I'm jealous!

Thanks. Yeah, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get the ridge cap on. I actually ended up renting one and getting it to my house to discover on my first trip up that it wasn't big enough to reach the ridge. Returned that one and rented the next size up. Got that one back home and when I went up with my first piece I learned that my ridge wasn't big enough to cover each side of the metal roofing adequately. I had to do a special order of the cap from the manufacturer and have it rushed delivered. The rental company was gracious enough to allow me to keep the lift for 3 extra days for free. It was normally $400 a day. So while I waited for the cap to show up I worked my arse off doing any and every job I could think of with the lift....stained all of the gable ends of my house and other outbuildings, cleaned all of my chimneys, did some work pruning trees, etc.

Natty, how did you get the ridge cap on with the bucket? Just lift it up to it, and sit on the floor and screw it on? I am trying to figure out how to install my ridge cap for this weekend. I can rent something like that, but I figured the bucket would be in the way.

Yes, you got it. I would move the floor of the bucket up so it was just a few inches above the ridge. Then I would kind of just kneel down and screw down the ridge. I could get the screws in from each side no problem. My ridge is about 37' long and I think I had to move the machine 4 or 5 times or so as I worked along. Not too bad. The machine I had was self driving and had controls right in the bucket. So, I could lower myself, grab the next piece of ridge cap and then move the lift without having to hook up to my truck. That made it a lot quicker.

Just checked out your Garage Thread....nice looking building. Looking at your dimensions I would be sure you get the biggest lift you can. I have a 12' ceiling, a 25' gable end length, and a 10/12 pitch....and the guys at the rental place were sure the first machine I brought would reach. It didn't.

Good luck this weekend.

Thank you! That is my concerns. I am at 30 feet to the top of the gable ends, with 14 foot side walls. They said it extends 34 feet, but they couldn’t tell me the horizontal reach. I have my doubts their machine will work for my ridge cap.

You are correct to doubt that one. The way these things work reduces the max. height as you extend the outreach. It's not you can go up 34' and then out 15' or so. As you go out over the roof it limits how high you can go. This is the one I used, and I had it just about maxed out.

Are you all hooked up heat-wise for the winter, Natty ?? Just wondering - in case you get banished for leaving the toilet seat up !!!
