Neighbor situation. (What to do)

Cool Hand Luke

5 year old buck +
Ok guys, I hate to be another one on here posting about neighbors but having a hard time coming to terms with it. All the properties around us are 30 acres+ except for 3 small -5 acre parcels between us and every one else. I met the guy two doors down this summer when I borrowed a planter from pheasants forever, he wanted to use it for another one of his property’s he hunts and picked it up when I was done.

He seemed nice enough, I told him I was glad to meet him and then he asked me if I was planning on doing much hunting. I could tell he was beating around the bush and I kind of sandbagged about it. He then told me that he sits on the fence line of his property during gun season, but never sees much. I kind of figured that wasn’t true, but also with the lack of deer in the past, that’s bringing me to a situation in real time. He’s running a trail camera in his backyard and getting pictures of big deer because they travel from the other big properties to mine. We’ve never spoken since that day until tonight. He texted me and asked me if I’ve seen the big buck that he’s hoping to get and if not he hopes I do. The problem is, he does not have permission to shoot out into the field that he’s sitting on. Also, the biggest kicker, he is not legal distance of neighboring houses as that has to be 300 yards for firearm, he’s 140 to 150 from both of his neighbors physical houses and 50yds to both property lines if I drop a pin on either side of his property to his neighbor’s houses.

Here’s the point, I’m not trying to be a dick and the Christian part of me really wants to love my neighbor, but after asking around, I hear this guy is kind of one of these braggy type hunters in the local community. What do I do? Send an anonymous tip and let the DNR handle it or confront him myself and then cause a dispute with a neighbor and live with that for who knows how many years. I just came from a situation like that with our last property except there was about 30 houses/people that hated me. I hate having that relationship as a neighbor. But the truth is, he has no right doing what he’s doing and he knows exactly what he’s doing. All advice appreciated!

I'm relatively certain Jesus Christ doesn't give a shit about who shoots what deer

That could certainly be true! But I do however want a good relationship with my neighbors. I’m not so sure they want that with me but that’s not the way I should perceive it. Thanks for your input, made me laugh!

Tough man. The Christian part seems like a moot point. Being a Christian doesn’t mean being walked on I don’t believe.
With that you work too hard for people to cut corners at your expense. Anonymous tip seems the way to go. Especially considering you have several close neighbors. Any one of them could have just as likely called as you.
I think you telling him he’s doing wrong, not that you said you would do that, won’t work in my opinion. He’s just gonna be an ass I bet in that scenario.

Thanks D, really appreciate ya.

I understand your concern, but if he is two properties over and isn’t shooting into your property, why is this your concern? Do the neighbors that live next to him know what he is doing? If they don’t, I would tell them and let them deal with it.

There are three, 4 acre lots, very narrow with newer houses stacked on each other out in the wide open. It’s very strange. The county doesn’t let you zone less than 10 anymore. They back up to a tree line on a 400 acre field that connects about a dozen original farms/properties. The point is, he’s shooting the deer that are traveling to the actual deer holding properties that people are working hard to maintain. And he’s doing so without anyone’s permission. I asked him if he knew his neighbors on either side and he said no.

I was friends with my neighbor who bought 10 acres next to me. He seemed like a nice guy who also liked hunting and was on the same page as me. Then I caught him doing a pile of illegal stuff (baiting, poaching, illegal burning from his junk business).

I didn’t want to ruin the relationship, so I turned him in on the confidential tip line hoping he would get a ticket and be law abiding after that. Nope, my name was released accidentally by the prosecutor and it went down hill from there. Shooting of pet (him shooting mine), threats both ways, nothing good. Then deer cross property lines after being shot and it gets ugly.

Don’t copy me. Be direct with the guy and tell him exactly what you expect and what happens if that doesn’t happen.

How do you know he’s not shooting them on his property? Where they are holding or headed to doesn’t matter if he shoots them where he has permission.

If you know he’s actually intending to hunt deer on someone else’s land and that someone else isn’t good with that. I’d make sure they are aware and let them deal with it.

What state are you in? MN has a law like that about distance from dwellings but it doesn’t apply if shooting on your own land. I live on a 6 acre square and one of my property lines is city limits with a neighborhood and a bunch of houses on 1/4 acre lots on the other side. I’m not the required distance from other houses but I can still hunt on my land because I own it. I don’t but if I saw a good buck I might!

Those are all great questions. Unless you know without a doubt he's shooting onto someone else's property then what's the problem?

The 5 acre lots are just a pain in the ass. I have a friend in MN, that borders a couple 5 acre parcels. He used to have some quality bucks, but the neighbors started hunting a lot and he hasn’t seen many deer at all this yr …

Tough situation.

He tried to talk strategy & it went downhill fast ! He’s thinking about selling, unless he can buy their land . Nothing trying to be a Debbie Downer , but its not great for management!

A few time lapse cameras on the field. IF he is using your property, then you got proof.

Wouldnt put anything fancier than rye in there.

Maybe start a screen planting for next year.

He a big hunter, or shoot the first thing type of guy.

What he does on his land is his business. If he is shooting onto yours that's different

Unless he's breaking IL state law by hunting within 300 yards of a dwelling. I had thought that homeowners could give permission to the hunter to be closer but it's their call.

If that is the law then yes I would agree

He’s not firearm hunting legally by regulation. I asked if he had permission and he said no. The houses are so close.

He’s 140 yards from either house with no permission.
