Was a busy night for predators on the trail. A bunch of coyotes, and the return of Mr. Bear for the second night in a row.
This camera has been the biggest surprise to me. I get more activity at that one spot than my other cell cams do. But all the cams do is make me want to see more. I put that camera up in that spot, intending it to be temporary. I put it there to see if any of the neighbors were still using it as a right of way, or if the local maple syrup guys were using it to access their sap lines. (So far I haven't seen anyone on the trail, even though I've seen them in the woods??) I didn't pick that spot for any particular reason. Which now makes me wonder what's going on, if anything, on the portion of the trail behind it? I have another one not in use. I could point it that way and see. Just seems wrong to me, all those woods and I'm watching a road.

In 10+(?) years with cameras out, I don't think I've ever gotten a gray squirrel before. If I see one every couple years it's a lot. It's one thing I wish we had more of. Every few years I'll shoot one for the frying pan. In the state land across the street there's maybe 4-5 oak trees in 1k+ acres. So if you set up on one of them and just wait long enough...
But it's not something I do often since there's so few of them.

And that very blonde pup was back again. I'm getting so much coyote traffic on that trail I'm thinking of finally trying some coyote sets come October. Maybe I can sort of semi prep them this weekend. I sure won't have time when I come to sit in a tree for a couple days next month.

A nice, low, flat rock along the trail would attract canines to use as a toilet / scent post. Place it now so they get used to using it. Maybe place a few rocks ...... and a couple dirt holes with tainted meat in them along the trail. Set your steel later at your convenience!

So of course today I get this. Which is another reason I've been leery about coyote traps.
I get dogs on camera and see them in person. There's a young women with her dogs that shows up on my cams from time to time. I've also seen about a half dozen or more different ones unaccompanied this year. This guy has a twin, I've seen them in person in the woods.
I want to get some "Warning predator traps in use" signs and put them on either end of the property to dissuade the local dog walkers.

I wasted a lot of money this weekend. Put down a whole bunch of seed on ground that looks like it hasn't seen a drop of rain in months. I knew it was stupid, but I couldn't store it and I knew I wouldn't get another crack at it till next spring.
I also mixed 25 gallons of a hot Triclopyr4 / Glyphosate mix. Then proceeded to immediately break and disable my sprayer... two different ways. Again no way to store it and I wouldn't get a chance to use it (on the Brush Honeysuckle) till next spring. So it all went on the ground. Not like in one big puddle, at least I was able to strategically pour it out along a couple hundred yards or so of tree/brush line. It will undoubtably kill some brush and trees, which I want, but it will be in the worst, most wasteful, most expensive, most environmentally unfriendly of ways. So pissed.

It's turning into coyote central! I'm seeing this one a lot. Right around the right bend in the trail (1st photo) there's a hole that I thought was a fox den. Maybe not.

Jeeze... I used to see a good deal of coyote tracks in the snow while hunting. I'd hear them all the time packed up yipping and howling in the evenings, but it was rare I'd get pictures of them. Maybe two three times a year. Man oh man I'm getting more coyotes than bucks for sure. The last two weeks more than any deer at all.

Would love to, but time/travel is always the issue. Next time there will be for bow hunting (3 1/2 days). Kind of hard to do both the same time/trip, doing one negates the other. Can't be out in the dark all night AND get up at 4AM. Next trip after with be rifle/deer. Same issues apply. Last time I went daytime coyote hunting was before I started bow hunting again.
Season is Oct 1 through March. But access/snow wise, December to March are usually out. I'm hoping now that I have cell cameras I'll be able know the snow conditions to get there in the winter. That's always been an issue with no way to know. I'd done that more than once for late muzzle loading or in the spring. A town about 25 minutes away had a school with a roof top web cam. I'd look at that and see no snow, think I was good. Only to drive five hours to get up on the hill and find a foot of snow and the ground and 4+ foot snow plow wall blocking the "driveway".

You could try trapping instead. Pull your traps when you leave, and freshen up your sets and add traps when you arrive.
Plus it's a good excuse to buy a silenced pistol.

My number's are off. 114 years would be the Sullivan Act. Silencers went 5 years later.
