Iam horrible at telling stories, but I shot this bull the second day into the trip. I was invited to join a hunting lease this year by a friendship I made at my bow hunting club two years ago. I don't live in a gun friendly state so finding a rifle range over 100 yards was impossible to find. So I wasnt super confident in my rifle abilities. Rifle shooting in a dynamic environment is a lot more diffcult than I thought. That evening we were sitting on top of a ridge when we heard two bugles on across the valley on the other ridge. One bull seemed to be low and the other seemed to be high on the backside of the ridge. The wind was right so we decided to walk to the otherside of the ridge and do a few cow calls and try to pull one in. (Getting in between them hopefully) Once we got on the other side we made a few cow calls and started slowly walking across the ridge when we hit an open area in the forest that has a old cattle pond on it. Luckly the cattle pond had a berm, because as we walked towards it covered our movement. As we crested the cattle pond berm we were surprised by an elk on the oppsite side silently just surveying. Instinctively we dropped to our knees and I raised my rifle / flipped the safety off and was going for a full frontal shot. When the elk turned broadside on me in the process of bailing. My cross hairs were on his lungs and I let one rip. The bull made it about 40 yards. The shot ended up being a double lung shot. Overall total awesome experience. The bull does have some unique antlers
( very tall and narrow). My buddy quickly name him skyscrapper as we were taking photos.
