After a bit of a dry early spring, our weather really turned in May taking us from near drought to near-flooding conditions. June ushered in higher temps and regular afternoon coastal showers to keep things damp and that made for ideal conditions for chanterelles.

We started finding them this week. A rain would help a ton though!

I'm going to start looking for them here in No. Indiana. Last year I didn't start till Labor Day, and I found lots, but it was over way too soon.
 
We found one small patch today in se WI. They were just starting. We picked about 15 and left the others to grow.

Last Sunday's results. Had a 2" rain Friday night, heading out today. Thanks to God for summer mushrooms and thermacells!!!

Seeing as I'm about as far away from FL as you can get (north and south anyway). What kind of mushroom are they?

These are yellow chanterelles- I'm in Indiana, and I know they are found in Michigan and Wisconsin. They might be up around you if you're experiencing 80 degree temps.
 
Yep, John, chanterelles indeed. Fairly easy to recognize when you find them. Down our way they're really a distinct color of yellowish/organish/gold that differentiates them from other mushrooms. They also don't have distinct deep gills like some look-alike mushrooms, instead having shallow false-gills that kind of fold / cross over into other folds to give the underneath a distinctive appearance. Unlike other mushrooms they don't grow in bunch form (multiple mushrooms growing out of one base stem), nor do they grow against tree trunks but instead tend to be dispersed relatively evenly below tree canopy, growing from dirt versus wood.

I always cut them with a sharp knife at ground level, leaving the base in the dirt as some reading I've done on them actually indicates harvesting them this way best ensures additional crops. On my place they grow in the EXACT same isolated spots each year. I walked about every inch to find them the first year I owned the place, doing so after other friends were reporting harvests (always after really hot, rainy, humid periods during the summer). Blessing is now that the spots are found, I can go directly to one or two and get all I can use at that moment.

Been so busy I haven't made as many harvests as I could, but did make another this past weekend.

For anyone who might see this who wants to hunt for them, jump to the 12:05 mark in the video and you get a really good view / description of the chanterelle... then at the 14:40 mark you get a good primer on the number one look-a-like to avoid.

So are they still popping in Florida? I had another good pick here in Indiana this morning, we should go until late September.

Growing paused down FL way, KDdid, after we had a couple of drier and more mild weeks in late July. Good bit of rain this week though still a bit more mild than normal for early August... temps surely will get hot and humid again soon and guessing I might get one more batch gathered up.
 
We've had a cool down since our last rain, I was finding them this morning at 56 degrees. Our last big flush two weeks ago was spurred on by 90's and rain.
