From deadly twisters, straight line winds, anvil sized hail…I was reminded of one of the south’s greatest storytellers. I heard Amite County Ms on the weather broadcast. Amite was home to one Jerry Clower. For the northerners on here Jerry may not ring a bell but down here his stories are like gospel. Me and my buddies could recite A Coon Hunting Story verbatim growing up. I’m sure @Turkish would know Jerry’s stories well in his neck of the woods. For those who don’t here’s a couple

I liked the selling porcupine eggs. Haven't heard him in a long time.

Read his books as a kid! They shoot canoes, don't they? And Never sniff a gift fish.

Isn't that Patrick McManus?

Oh crap, it is! I probably should have fact checked that before I hit submit. My two brain cells must not be touching this morning!

We had his records growing up. I wore those records out. My dad's side of my family is from Mississippi, and I spent a lot of good times there growing up. I killed my first deer in Amite county.

Grew up in the mid Atlantic and knew who he was as a kid. I gotta dig up the one about setting rats on fire.

The old guys at deer camp always had his cassette tapes going.

^ A southern version of The Yooper's?

Used to spend a short week every summer camping on the Amite River just outside Jerry’s hometown of Liberty, MS. Those were some hot muggy nights I’m not sure I’d enjoy now. My dad was a saint for taking me! I looked forward to that part of summer more than any other part. I live closer to that locale now than I did growing up. I’m just west of there.

ETA. His bit about the “women’s libber” is a good one for one of the political threads!

Favorite Jerry Quote, that I use to this day.

"That woman is educated far beyond her intelligence".

It's a unisex statement.

I grew up in Yazoo City where Jerry lived. His youngest daughter babysat me a few times. My favorite story as a kid was Steel Marbles with the lines "Boy you got ants in your pants?" "No ma'am. Hot steel balls."

Marcell and his talking chainsaw!!!!!

I'm old enough to remember seeing Jerry Clower on Hee-Haw years ago. They'd have him on periodically - and he could tell a story!! Parents were big into old, classic country music - so Hee-Haw was a Saturday evening regular.
