Lost tree

Charman03

5 year old buck +
I had a nice initial tree that seemed to be doing very well, last year was its second growing season in my orchard and really put on some nice growth. However, this spring it never "woke" up and is the only tree out there with no signs of life this year. I guess it died somehow, not really sure, bc it seemed to be doing very well at the end of the growing season. Any ideas why this happens. Tree looks great other then the no growth part

Look around the base for girdling at the soil line, apple borer, give the tree a gentle tug I've lost some nice chestnuts to voles this year.

Likely some kind of root damage as was already stated. Do a scratch test and see if you have green tissue under the bark. Who knows maybe the tree is just slow to get going for some odd reason this year. I wouldnt take the saw to it yet!

It happens. I lost 3 this year but have 22 grafts working so I feel I am ahead lol

Thanks for the advice, I'll check it out a little better next time over

So I got around to pulling this tree today. Anything unusual in the pics?

Looks like some damage to the tree above the graft line in a couple of pictures. Root dont look healthy and beginning to decay, but hard to say which might have caused the death.

Maybe vole damage. They do go subterranean

Phytopthera root rot possibly. Does look like some decay in the roots. Does the area stay wet at any time of the year?

Not really in this spot. Keep in mind this tree has been dead a year so that could cause that decay most likely
