Local Crabapples your keeping an eye on?

I'm going to try my hand in grafting this year from this wild crab.i found it along the road in front of my foodplot. It has 2 inch apples that I thought were going to stay a tart green apple but the next time I went up they had a red blush and turned sweet. This tree has limited sunlight and was absolutely full of apples at one point. They seemed to start dropping early October and we're done before November started. You can see where the deer stripped alot of the apples and leaves on the bottom.
I wouldn't be surprised if that tree isn't an apple and not a crab. Graft it, train and prune it so the fruit gets plenty of sun and I bet the fruit sizes up a bunch.

I’ve been scouting road sides, parks , neighborhoods, farmsteads and pastures for years. Ive added a select few to our orchard. Meadows crab is the first tree added. Extremely happy with these 2 trees I planted in 2018. They are on B118. IMG_1478.jpegIMG_3986.jpegIMG_2736.jpeg

Where are you kicakpoo? The 1st one with purple flowers looks alot like red splendor. Looking for some good ones for zone 3. Got a nice one I am eye on for another year or two, just ot make sure its not biennial, or heavily biennial.

I’m in zone 4/5 in sw Wisconsin. The apples have light pink almost orange flesh and can get up to 2 inches in size.

This one I noticed scouting during bow hunting during the rut in a pasture thicket a few years ago. Grafted onIMG_2762.jpegIMG_2297.jpegIMG_2763.jpegIMG_4070.jpeg Dolgo rootstock and will be going in the orchard next spring.

Hey Kickapookid. That Meadows crab is a beauty. When does it start to drop and for how long?

I would have to say it’s my top wildlife deer tree at this point. It starts to slowly drop about mid October and have seen it hang on till until late march. They don’t last that long up at camp. It’s produces annually and is very insect and disease resistant so far.

Nice finds. Should serve you well for years, KickapooKid!

Kickapoo, please check your messages.
Thanks
Rubee
