Kerr crabs

Most of my SLN trees have died. Interesting that the truth comes out. Glad I grafted the types I wanted onto better roots.
I haven't seen the problems you gents have with Anty. I wonder why the difference? Most of our Anty trees were bought while Bill McKentley still owned SLN. Don't know if Bill's grafting methods were more precise, or if our weather / soil makes a difference ..... or if we just got lucky?? Our Anty trees are certainly doing better than our B-118's, some of which are leaning.

SLN claims to be very organic, no fertilizer, mulch, etc. Not sure if the original owners was like that.

Ill have to check their catalog at my office tomorrow. Somewhere they said they're all Siberian crab for this year. Or maybe starting with this years rootstock they use.

They have great rootstock if your looking to graft your own. $4 each for Siberian crab. shipping was $25 to my house in NY. Last year bought a lot of trees. Think 11 or 12. Mostly crabapples on Siberian stock. Only exception was the Minnesota cider apple forgot the number. All grew well at camp. Despite not being able to water them much and the soil up there.

Think all my Siberian grafts took last year. M111's I got from another place weren't so hot looking and some failed. Anty was a hit / miss last year.

Hard to tell for sure at camp, but several rootstocks are doing well. Siberian dolgo ranetka antonovka. Trying more B118 and P18 up there.

Most of my trees are on Dolgo rootstock and I haven't buried any grafts. Any experience or thought on burying a dolgo rootstock in Zone 3?
I am now called zone 4, but used to be zone 3. I don’t bury dolgo rootstocks.

$55 for a seedling? Ouch

You taste those? When do they drop? I topworked kerr onto a droptine on anty this year. Had 1 cherry sized fruit. Took a bite, not bad at all. Kept the seeds.

Trying to figure out what to do with seedling tryouts. Might do a 75 yard row of B29 on a trellis for guinea pig scions. Grow some seedling and graft several scions to the trellis. Could have 100 seedlings in a row easily. For 2025, I am planting them at camp and a a coworker's place. Got a tree that enterprise and honeycrisp are parents of. They're next to violi's, sweet 16, and dolgo. 2 away from these 2 trees are galarina and winter wildlife. Either gona taste good and be apples, or hang on a tree past groundhog's day...... When they get big, I will direct polinate with those mesh bags.

big dog x yellow dog sandbur..... Yellow mutt?

:). Heinz 57?

You have a better plan than I did when I grew lots of seedlings. I planted for exclosures using five foot cement reinforcing wire , put window screen around them, and ignored them.

My excuses were busy with work, with kids, and I am cheap.

I had 4 exclosures and I have one left to remove this spring.

I have not. They are very popular with the wildlife. Very consistent with a long drop time.

Letting ones i think are particularly good grow to maturity. Other will grow a year or two, then use scion for top work to see what hey are. Then use seedling rootstock bottom for known scion variety topworking.

Might make a whole row of g890 at home. Right by my bow spot
