I'm not a big fan of the stuff and I'm trying to eradicate it on my place.
I see no browsing of it and it colonizes and chokes out anything along edge areas that have light shade. It also spreads from the edge and out into plots. It grows in those areas that are good raspberry habitat...I'd rather have raspberries.

I've heard it's pretty good stuff for your home garden. The tubers can be left in the ground until you want to harvest, like carrots. I haven't ever heard of getting browse on them.

I used to pickle them and they were great. Planted some in a food plot and I think the deer stood over them waiting for them to grow.

Any new experiences with Jerusalem artichokes?

I like them as a garden plant. I'm thinking about using some of the extras to establish screening and perennial food for deer. Anyone have any new experiences since this thread was started?

Interesting native plant. Apparently it gets big fast it is native to north america and deer do it eat. I have no experience with it but it is interesting. People can eat it and it tastes like potatoes when cooked. Not related to artichoke and Not from Jerusalem. My wife said she knows what it is and has always wanted to try it. Bill, let us know how it grows!

I have been growing it for years for myself. It's excellent. It's better tasting than potatoes. It stays in the ground until you harvest it. It's incredibly versatile.

I just wonder how it performs for deer.

Alright, now I am going to plant some. Seems like it is cold tolerant, native, grows like a weed, deer eat it, grows tall and thick for cover and it provides flowers for pollinators. Disadvantages? What’s not to like? What am I missing? It is another native to add for groceries on the ground.

all of mine were schmoked in the texas summer heat , lack of rain, etc

perhaps its time to revisit the idea with a different planting location

I'm going for it, too. I ordered 2 lbs of tubers. I'm going to build a bed for them and fill it with potting soil. Then I will dig it all up in the Fall or Spring and plant out about half of my crop of tubers, reserve some for food, and replant the remaining 2 lbs. That way, if the deer or the elements smoke my wildlife planting, at least I will have more to plant the next year, and hopefully a couple pounds to eat each year.

I planted 6 today in pots under grow lamps in my basement. Will see what happens. My wife wants to eat some of them and this is just a small experiment to see how they do in NH. I will give them a head start in my house and then transplant in early may after the risk of frost is lower.
