This gold rush isn't looking that great, a liberty near by looks fine. These are planted in a clearing with many cedars near by

Looks like some bug damage as well. Something eating those leaves

how often do you spray for bug and when?

I've been spraying for bugs every 2 weeks thru the summer with Sevin. You can get it at Home Depot, Lowes, or most hardwares or garden centers. Follow directions on the label for mixing. I use a tank sprayer that pumps. Goldrush is susceptible to cedar apple rust - CAR, but I've read it doesn't affect the fruit - just leaves. I'll be spraying mine again this coming weekend. Jap. beetles are my biggest concern at this time of the summer.

Rusts can affect the apples and leaves. This page has an unappetizing looking apple with cedar quince rust on it. http://www.extension.org/pages/60111/quince-rust-of-apple#.VcAklPlViko
Quince rust looks worse on apples than CAR. This flicker page has some good disease photos. https://www.flickr.com/photos/52467126@N05/with/5657427047/

Rusts are a fungus so you need to spray a fungicide. A pesticide like Sevin won't do anything about it. Once you are seeing the leaf spots, it is probably too late to do anything about it this year.

Chicken - You're right about rusts being funguses and Sevin is an insecticide - of no use against a fungus. I was just answering Charman's ? about when I spray for bugs. The info I mentioned about CAR on Goldrush is not from any expertise I have, but info I got from others on here and from several universities' apple programs and some nurseries. I guess there are several apple varieties that get CAR on the leaves without it really damaging the fruit. Goldrush is supposed to be one of them. I never learned anything about Quince rust. Hopefully I never encounter QR !!

I'm lucky on the CAR front in that the juniper species required as the alternate host for the CAR fungus are not native around my hunting area for miles and no camps have any of them planted. So CAR has not been a problem for our trees - thank God !!!

Good info, thanks

Bows, I realize you know the difference but the casual reader might have thought you meant spray Sevin for CAR. I posted so no one else got confused.

Here is an interesting study I found on CAR susceptibility trials. Wide variation in resistance between apples and severity at different locations for a given apple.

Spray a mix of captan and imidan

No problem, Chicken. All good !! Good idea to eliminate any confusion.
