Maybe the lack of black women in archery hunting is the very reason she was put on the cover? It doesn't have to be pandering.

Not for nothing, but this could also be a photo from the Field to Fork program which is designed to recruit new adult hunters. There are all kinds of photos like this from the past several years of the program, Wisconsin included.

Playing devil's advocate...most people get into hunting because of a family member. Programs like Field to Fork (and possibly photo shoots like this one) help bring new people to an amazing hobby.

Like I said earlier in the thread, Universities started doing this decades ago and everyone knew the game back then. This isn't anything new. It could be pandering, but my money is on it being a recruitment tool.

I get it. As likely as it is a recruitment tool, it’s just as likely it’s a government organization feeling obligated to check the proverbial box. I’ve seen these examples in regulation books in Georgia in Kentucky in Wisconsin in bass pro catalogs in Sitka gear catalogs, and I’m sure a ton of other states and companies. The reality is a minimum of 95% of hunters are white males if I had to guess. I’ve been hunting for 30 years in the Deep South. I’ve run into 2 African Americans Turkey hunting once on public land and one guy at a duck club in Arkansas. That’s it.
So totally cool if the end goal is to pretend an African American female is out grinding in the deer woods toting some archery equipment pointing out what to look for to the white male to attract more minorities to the sport, but I like to believe there are more effective ways than being blatantly ridiculous.

Earlier I used the example of having a women's division in chess championships. Fundamentally and quantitatively, there should be no reason to have a men's and women's division for chess. However, only around 2% of Grandmasters are women despite being half the population. Is this because women inherently aren't good at chess?

A separate division for women in chess is helpful for recruiting more women to the game and increasing the competitiveness of the women's division. Maybe someday there won't be a need for a women's division. Similarly, maybe someday having an underrepresented minority on an outdoor magazine cover won't even be notable. In the meantime, I'm good with efforts for recruiting more and different people to the outdoors and hunting in particular.

You can go to public land in any direction within about an hour and find non-white men and women enjoying the areas their tax dollars are paying for. Even though I'm just as likely to say humbug and keep looking for a spot with fewer people, I think it's an overall awesome site to see.

I have to disagree with your assessment of why there are separate divisions for men and women in chess. According to Dr. Jordan Peterson, if you look at bell curves of cognitive abilities of men and women you will find a wider and flatter curve for men. So, when you get to the extreme right of the curve, or left but the left side is irrelevant here, you will have more men in that cohort than women. Therefore one would expect there to be a larger number of male grandmasters than female grandmasters. It's not sexism, it's just statistics.

Haha! I didn't even catch that she was carrying the quiver but he had the bow until your post. Honestly you see a lot more mixed couples that might look just like that these days but when they botch it like that it's not debatable what the intention is.
