Holy crab from Midwest Trees

Charles Clear

5 year old buck +
I’ve had a few members ask me how my Midwest trees are doing. Holy crab sure looks like a winner. I planted it in 2022. I’ll keep an eye on it to see when they drop, but in the drought I’m in the critters have really been crushing my apples up in the tree before they are ripening.

Charles,
What size are your Holy Crabapples? They look great. Tasted them yet?

I'm planning on ordering a few Holy Crabs for 2026

Hey Charles what are you useing to stamp those aluminum name tags?

Someone gave me a stamper, I think from Michael’s, works great! I do the same thing and bought key rings to put on the fence

Is this from the place in central MN? Midwest deer trees?? I am thinking of buying 3-4 trees for next year.

I've never tried the apples yet so I can't comment on taste. Tony is correct it is a stamp set.

You will find that Luke is a very dedicated apple guy.
Art, you sold me on trying Dolgo as a rootstock and that is why I bought from them originally.

Dolgo rootstock is getting hard to find.

I have a Yellow Belly from Midwest Deer Trees. I have three apples on it that I want to sample. Luke says his workers eat all of the crabs off of his YB.

One of my YB is in the upfront orchard and the other is outback.

Someone mentioned lat year or so the major supplier for dolgo had trouble getting seeds. Only been doing this a few years, but antonovka seems to be pretty tough too.

Charles,

Any other pics or info on midwest deer trees? The trees varieties get mentioned decently on here, but not many have ordered from him. Got a few buckman and courthouse on anty and siberian at camp.

Anty rootstock does just fine at my place. B118 is a pain because they all tend to lean for me. I have to anchor them to straighten them out. I only bought a small 3 tree order from Midwest deer trees. Along with Holy crab, I bought a county line and a yellow belly crab. They haven't been as vigorous growers as the Holy crab. They are about half the size of the holy crab and haven't produced yet. Luke has a few more varieties I'd like to try though.

I got a UPS email today that my Midwest deer tree delivery is coming Monday....my ground is froze solid yet

I guess they're going in the shop for a couple weeks

I guess they're going in the shop for a couple weeks
I got a Email Thursday...my deliever date is also Monday , but by USPS. I think it kind of odd because MWDT's website says they only ship on Monday and Tuesday. I'm good to go, no frozen ground here ,already planted a few trees from Blue Hill on March 9 th. Probably another week and I'll have to mow the grass for the first time this spring.
