Helping one get thru

roymunson

5 year old buck +
Neighbors either hit this buck or he got gored. I saw him monday of gun season and he was limping badly. This picture was post gun season on Sunday night and he's looking gaunt.

I know corn is a good attractant, but it isn't great for rehabbing or deer health.
I had a buddy talk about putting a bunch of carb rich food down (I have access to a brassica field at another location that doesn't have enough deer to keep it clipped down) and I thought about adding some of that via picked crops.

Primary goal would be to kill him. He has to be bedded close.

Secondary would be to get him thru the season and be around next year.

Worst case is he dies this winter.

Any Ideas? Here's a pic. He's looking skinny

I've seen some deer with severly damaged legs that can barely walk, but they could still eat well enough to keep their weight up. That deer looks close to death, so maybe he was hit by a car and has internal damage in addition to the leg issue. Or perhaps the deer has CWD or some other disease.

I'd be really surprised if that deer lives, so hopefully you can shoot him. That's really too bad because that's a really nice buck.

that's what I'm afraid of. Hoping he is staying close to the food and I can get him shot. He's gone downhill significantly in the last week.

I also wouldn't be surprised if he dropped his antlers soon.

Won't he come to a bait pile? Ohio is a legal baiting state?

he's bedding close. That's where I have the pics of him. Just haven't had him daylight yet. Maybe a weather front would help... i dunno.

Can you sneak into where he is bedded on the gun weekend?

Dude...looks like you could catch him with a glue trap.
