I remember the high premiums and high deductibles from reitiring at 55 years old. My wife really struggled with that. It seemed crazy. But, we bought the best supplemental insurance at the time (BC/ BS Gold) and never looked back. They no longer offer this plan...but it has paid for itself in spades. Yeah....it was a bit scary (for my wife) until we qualified for Medicare....yet Medicare came and our insurance has been golden indeed.

I do not have a clue what I may have paid without this insurance....but for us, it would have been huger. Aside from the "normal" th things were multiple open heart surgeries and valve replacements and more. Those things could clean you out.....yet our costs have been quite minimal. A real non-event.

I almost have to pinch myself with the low costs we have had for multiple surgeries over time....for both her, and me.

Buy the best you can afford....is my 2 cents. We did, and it came back in spades. I do not think they offer the plan we have anymore......but it sure proved to be a good one.

$7000 dedictible for me, $14000 for the family

Ain't being self employed great...

BTW, I've already hit my deductible for the year.

I will see you that and raise you a diabetic step-son that still believes if he eats enough sugar every day and puts more insulin through himself in a day than most would in a week that his life is going to be grand in another 10 years if not sooner.

My brother in the “free state of Florida” pays through the nose for an HMO. But at least that’s available to him. Me no way.

I’m very seriously considering going to work for the federalrallies my last 5 work years just for the medical benefits in retirement.

It's a good idea. My brother in law works for the federal government. Really nice benefits.

FL offers EPO that you have some insurance while traveling . MO obumer care and most other states as soon as leave state have nothing unless they bill as emergence. When they leave you out of ER will need to crawl home PDQ for any fallow up visits.

I got a blood disease and take 40k+ worth of clotting factor each month. I hit my deductible every year in January.

I get to have ankle fusion surgery on Thursday. I'll be off my feet for 8 weeks then in a boot for 4.

Anyone wanna travel for habitat work?
