Health insurance

Angus 1895

5 year old buck +
I got blue cross in Idaho. I’m 63.

It’s $1600 a month. With a $5000 deductible.

Is there any alternative?

Thanks

Im 59 and Blue cross for 2025 was $406 a month with about $9K out of pocket. Now $850 for same insurance. If income is $62K its$300 and if $63K+ jumps to the $850. With Trump in office I can pay the difference. Seniors are getting additional $12k off taxes 2026, biggest in history. It will all work out better in long run. Dont forget to check out TrumpRX for pharmaceuticals.

Wow. I pay about $380 (IIRC) month with no deductible. Blue Cross Gold for the win!

Age 65 you will see health insurance cost go down, as you qualify for a Medicare supplement.

There are supplements that range from $0-400 ? Possibly more. My dad was on a military service supplement for $0 and it was a pretty good plan .

I’m 57 & my wife and I pay $1680 month ….That’s a $10k deductible! Not cheap in MN !

What did you pay in 2025?

When I retired from the Feds I kept my standard option Federal Blue Cross. I pay almost $700 per month for me and wife combined. In addition, Govt also pays some. Between me and wife, we pay about $350 a month combined for medicare - so about $1050 a month all in. Between the two - we have no medical out of pocket other than dental, vision, and a small amount for drugs.

Don't have enough information.
Are you retired?
Is it just you or you and a spouse?
If you're retired do you have any money in Roth accounts?
Are you drawing social security?
Did you check at Healthcare.gov?

Not retired.

It’s just for me.

Not drawing social security

I have a Roth and a HSA.

What should I check at healthcare . Gov.?

Thanks

Is that obamacare? I'm on obamacare and I guess I did poorly enough last yr that they're giving me some money back. This yr we are now on BCBS silver because the last 2 health ins companies left the state.

If you're buying insurance on the marketplace it's based on your taxable income.
The lower your taxable income the smaller your premium. S.S. is considered taxable income.

When we retired my wife took her S.S. at 62. I didn't take mine until 65.
Her S.S., plus the balance we needed which came from Roth accounts kept our taxable income below 30K. That allowed us to get a plan that had no premium and a reasonable deductible.

If you go to healthcare.gov you can look at all the plans available to you in your area. Or you can go to an insurance broker and he could show you all the plans.

If the insurance company is writing you a check it's because they over charged you. 80% of premiums have to go towards paying claims. If they didn't hit that mark they have to give it back. That can be done different ways, reduced premiums the next year or they cut you a check.

Coming from IRS. Not sure exactly because my wife deals with that, but I think she basically guesses how much to pay monthly based on guessing our income. She overpaid so we get a refund.

Sold an investment property last year
With a nice gain. Being punished for it now.

Obama bronze
$2100/month
$7k deductible
$14k family deductible.

It’s basically catastrophic insurance that sucks.

Guess I should STFU and be happy!
