Hazelnut Planting Tips

I used tubes on American plum and a few crabs last year. I’m just not in love with the maintenance of the plantings with last years leaves sticking them. I think I’m going to remove them all and replace the crab cages with remesh and the shrubs with welded wire, or just remesh for them all. Lots of work. On the bright side, my deer won’t be back until the crops are in and growing so I won’t need to rush the cages.

I’ve used remesh before. It’s solid and easy.

This is pretty much exactly what I am doing as well. Essentially creating windrows of cover with hazelnut, elderberry, and American plum.

This is what our south hollow ariel with some of the spots that need work this summer.

I have a good 100 or so hazelnuts that I hope to start in pots in a couple of weeks. They've been in the fridge since fall, so should be stratified. How critical is it that the shells crack open, if at all? So far, I don't see any that have opened.
I was going to start them in the same deep pots that I use for acorns. Any other tips?

That's weird. Take 10 or so, put them in damp sphagnum moss in a baggie.and set it in your garage. Maybe the slowly increasing temperatures will trigger something in them to wake up.

I tubed my bareroots the first year and they quickly out grew the tubes. Switched to cages and growth slowed alot. They have been in the ground 10 years and Id probably be comfortable removing cages, but I just let the deer eat all the sprouts and new growth that stick out of the cages...which they readily do. They love to browse my hazelnuts and no way they could survive without at least a few years of protection.

Well my garage is probably colder then the fridge. I'll try some in the basement where I have the acorns potted.

I think the seed embryo expanding is what opens it up. The husk opens up and then a few days later the radicle starts to emerge.

It was funny, we graze cattle, if they disrupt a hazelnut cage. Usually the hazelnut is not eaten, just the grass around it.
