Grand slam of shite

rocksnstumps

5 year old buck +
In the Great Lakes area, a grand slam in the fishing world is catching 5 kinds of big fish in a single day. Kings, cohos, rainbow trout, brown trout, and lake trout. Difficult to do because they like different temps and areas/depths to hang out most times.

When I bought my land over 20 yrs ago already had autumn olive, jap honeysuckle, and jap barberry. About 5 yrs ago during a cut my forester mentioned he saw some young buckthorn. Grrrrrreat. Today noticed a big azz bush of multiflora rose. So there. Completed the grand slam of invasive shit for my area. Not including the acres of prickly ash. At least that is native.

So disgusted just had to vent. Sigh 😞

Now if you could only get some phragmites in your swampy areas you'd be set.

Glyphosate, 2,4D, Triclopyr. Buy gallons of them when they go on sale.

If you can afford a forestry mulcher, get one of those in there to grind it all down. Then spray the nasties that grow back.

Then plant native stuff that will choke out the bad stuff. And spot spray the nasties as they grow back.

It's not easy, but it should help a lot.

The forestry mulcher is not an option even with a big pile of money. Well maybe with a huge stash of Bitcoin to replace mulcher parts every 20 ft. Rocks, boulders, slope from being on glacial moraine/drumlin. It would all be hand work. It's not super rough terrain but bad enough that a 4 wheeler has to stay to mostly trails. Not enough ground clearance to clear the rocks. My tractor does a bit better being taller......until you rip off the hydraulic steer cylinder. That was not a good day.

Actually in the full sun areas I tolerate the native prickly ash some. A slowly marching mass growing from the rhizomes like a shield wall of a Roman Legion. That stuff just engulfs and overwhelms the invasive crap. When it encroaches where I don't want it gets the Stihl brush cutter treatment. The most insidious is actually the jap barberry because it can grow from full shade into full sun.
