Frostseeding - Other Than Clover

farmlegend

5 year old buck +
I've been frostseeding clover into my food plots with abundant success over the last 20+ years. It's probably my most foolproof planting tactic.

I've played around with frostseeding alfalfa and chicory, also, and it just plain did not work very well.

I'm curious if anyone's had success with frostseeding other seeds.

Dang. I was planning on frost seeding clover, alfalfa, and chicory. Too bad alfalfa and chicory don't work.

Chicory worked for me albeit it may not have been strictly from frost seeding rather than broadcasting in the spring and it grew.

I tried frostseeding grazing alfalfa along with my clovers a couple times. Some alfalfa showed up, but it was very spotty.

Chicory was worse.

What time of year? I wonder if overseeding after frosts would work better. I've always seeded in the fall and spring/summer, but want to try frost or early spring this year in a spot.

Principally March, but have done February and early April also. My median last frost date is around May 7. Extreme southern Michigan.

I cannot recall a single failure of clover frostseeding. FWIW, I do my own mix. Like alice white, ladinos, alsike, medium red, and others. Usually buy from Welter.
