Frost Seeding Medium Alternatives

farmlegend

5 year old buck +
Would like to frostseed some clover shortly across about six acres. Plan on using my PTO cone broadcast spreader. Small seed, and I want something to broadcast along with it to make the process less problematic. In the past I have used pelletized lime for this purpose, which I've found too messy for my tastes(not looking forward to an icy cleanup routine). I've read where rice hulls are a good "companion" option for broadcasting seed; called a couple feed mills and they reacted as if I'd asked for plutonium hulls.

Any other options?

When I had the local PF chapter drill in my CRP, the drill operator had me run to the local co-op to get either rolled or steal cut oats (can't remember which specifically now) to mix with the NWSG seed and get it to flow better through the drill. Whichever it was, Napoleon Feed Mill had it readily available.

I actually called Napoleon Mill and the guy I spoke to had NFI what I could use other than my suggestion of pelletized lime.

cracked corn?

It might be easier/cheaper to get a front ATV rack mounted spreader that works for small seed. I planted 8 acres of CRP with that setup, and it worked really well and you can easily watch the seed come out and adjust if necessary as it is mounted on the front rack.

I have one of those and I really don't like using it for clover seed. Cannot seem to get it to work well with just the straight-up clover seed. Seed output is either too little or too much.

Damn this product procurement business is frustrating. I've called four mills and everyone I've spoke to reacts as if it were the weirdest damn thing they ever heard of.

Oats might work as well to mix with clover seed, but I've never tried that myself.

Cracked corn sounds like a good idea.

I thought about that, but oats could have weed seeds.

Seed oats are usually cleaned before being bagged, but feed oats could have some weed seeds.

Clay base floor dry. Can buy at walmart.
