Foggy's Deertopia Proving Grounds - Happenings

Just dumped two inches out of my home rain gauge....which is now only a few miles from Deertopia. Great rainfall for the past few days....and a good time to have it going into winter now. IMG_3439.JPG

He is loading the spoils into a dump truck and then haling about a quarter mile to my swamp road to put fill over my tamarack logs place some years back. Two projects for the price of one.

That looks good. How deep are you planning on digging the pond?

How many deer did your group bag this year on your place?

I'm having it dug to six feet deep so far. May go deeper if we dont get some water. I figured we would be in water for sure by now. Putting about a foot of soil over those logs. Hard to estimate how much fill it takes.....but we will dig until the logs are covered all the way across.

We only took one doe from my land to thios point. We really have not hunted much.....as I still have the effects of our move going on, and we go t a new great-grandson.....which took away two of our hunters and then me too for a baptism. Busy year.....too busy to hunt much. Going to OZ on Thursday.....and still lots to do. Took my heaters from the blinds today and most stands were not hunting in. Also got my cameras out of the woods today.....and closing up my log cabin for the winter. We all watched allot of does and we did see a couple good bucks....but no shot opportunities. Next year!

Couple more pics from the dig today. Dug to 13 feet deep.....but water seems to run at ten feet. Continuing to dig down to thirteen feet deep and net about 3 feet of water at the bottom. Did not quite fishing up today. A few more hours to go in the morning. I think it's going to work out pretty nicely.

Make the pond bigger you need a bit more dirt. :)

Pond looks deep.

Water was deeper than I thought it would be. Need to taper the sides in a few places.....and we need about 5 more loads of dirt tomorrow. Was a nice smooth drive across that corduroy. Finally!

Can he run a quick trench to connect it to water? That goes extremely quickly and might guarantee you water in the pond.

We can get trapping in spring and it get it full of minnows by fall and ready for perch.

As a matter of fact.....I could trench about 40 yards or so and connect to an existing huge swamp. Contemplating. Know of any nice diving boards for sale? ;).

Will have a 12 + foot wide sand road over that 100 yards of low land. I wonder if I can grow switch grass on the sides of this? May find a little black dirt too....could use some "binder" in that sand. Any opinions on how to grow something there? May find some cuttings too....and stick them alongside the roadway.....I'd sure like the game to use this road at some point.

If I could sneak across this trail.....I'd be in a real honey-hole on the other side. pew, pew, pew.

We could use tag alder stems for pool noodles and be real jackpine about it.

I bet that guy would like the extra hour or two of work as well.

Also consider if you'll need to cross that trench. Might be a good idea to run and get a culvert soon as he's on board to do it.

You could even keep the dirt from the trench to do mounds off your road once that's finished. Could provide a nice spot to do some willow clusters or black spruce to give the critters some cover if they start using the road. Once you've got the road, you've got all kinds of options to start building off of it.

You're thinking larger than my energy level SD. I got golf to play and pontoon rides to do. I'm more into low-hanging fruit these days. Grin.
