Foggy's Deertopia Proving Grounds - Happenings

I wouldn't touch it anymore this year.

See how it responds next spring (it's going to be good) and spray 2,4D or duracor as necessary depending on broad leaf competition.

So....I may finally have some switch grass growing? at least this stuff is all in rows and its grass....and growing like crazy. Does not have the little "hairs" when I pull the leaves from the stem as some say it must. Leaves look too wide....and I do not see little hairs...but it is all in a row. Go figure. Damned if I know.

Nice!! Just as many of the wise minds here said (not I), it came through for you Foggy! I’m glad to see it. Worry about the weeds another time, go celebrate the fact your efforts paid off.

I believe it’s attributed to Winston Churchill, but the phrase “perfection is the enemy of progress” comes to mind. You’re heading in the right direction pal! Don’t sweat the small stuff.

yep.....or as Alfred E. Neuman used to say...."Wut, Me Worry?"

So today I had a bit of time while my wife had her hair "done" in Pequot Lakes. So I raced to my land to apply 3 bags of Urea to my brassica. Not much time...so I put my Herd Spin spreader on my loader bucket....and ran my electric and corded conrtrols. All in all worked pretty good with extra urea carried in the loader bucket. I did have one spill....and that was due to uneven ground and freaking gopher mounds.

Gonna do a photo dump of my land.....really looking good right now....with so much food available.

Switchgrass is going gonzo now……and out of the blue……I got LOTS of big bluestem growing here too. Very mysterious. A good thing!, It’s just strange where it came from and came on strong in various locations on my property. Yowsa!

Our big Bluestem has had the best yr ever! It's everywhere and it's thick.

How is it at continuing to reseed or titler? I really like this stuff. Ive seen a little in the past...but nothing like I have this year. Fanstastic cover and bedding areas....really dense in some areas. Hope it comes back next year.

My grandson was up here to hunt bear....and took a nice 250 lb specimens on the opening evening. Then we packed up my reloading room to send it on to his and his dad's place (while his dad went bear hunting too). We had a great day....and I gave him a late summer land tour of my property.

I do not remember the last time he saw this property when everything is green. It's really a paradise there for wildllife right now. Super cover and lots of food readily available. My brassica plots and clover now look outstanding.

And....the biggest news of all is that my switch is finally growing nearly everywhere I planted it. Very slow to show itself....but much of it is now 2 to 3 feet tall.......even some that has shot up in the past week or two. Unreal how this stuff goes when it goes. I suppose my most average crops are about three feet high and reasonably weed free. My crops are solid one way or the other.

I have 100's of nice transportable trees (fir, spruce, pine) that I can do without. In fact trimming my land back may be a good thing.

I intend to drill rye and maybe some radish into the plotsI I have already established previously. I got paranoid for a bit ,,,,as we recently aviuded g

Your place is looking nice.

Happy for you Fog. Hard work (and patience) paid off!

That's great that he bagged a bear - good to thin them out. Did he have a lot of them coming into the bait site?

Big photo dump below of my day drilling winter rye and red and white clover / GHR mix into my existing clover and brassica plots. I drilled four acres with this mix. The switch is now really growing fast along the perimeters of many of these plots. I waited for nearly 75 days after planting the switch....but it finally showed and now is growing in almost every spot I drilled it......with rapid visible progress each week now. Unreal. This is going to make my plots golden....as the bucks will not be able to visually see who in in the plots.....unless they enter. Game-changer for daytime activity....I hope / think.IMG_3081.JPGIMG_3083.JPGIMG_3084.JPGIMG_3085.JPGIMG_3089.JPGIMG_3085.JPGIMG_3090.JPGIMG_3091.JPGIMG_3095.JPGIMG_3095.JPG

Plots are looking good Foggy, next year that switchgrass will be 5-7' tall and doing exactly what you planted it for!

Yep....I think you are right....and five feet yet this year would not surprise me. It's incredible the growth happening now. ....and I thought it was a bust. We have been getting very regular rainfalls on a weekly basis. I've never had this good of plots, nor acorns, plumbs, apples, berries, and hazel. Fabulous groceries this year....after a seemingly disastrous start. And out of the blue.....I got this big bluestem grass almost everywhere. Deer are running back and forth as I drill my seeds today. This is surreal.

Very enjoyable day at my place just sucking it all in. The decision to go no-till and buy my drill is among the best decisions I have ever made. I did in four hours today....what would have taken 4 days in time gone by (and now I am not able to work that hard....nor enjoy that kinda work).

My grandson took a bear. He has an interesting way to compare the size of this bear. He killed it with the 20 Gauge Savage rifled slug gun I gave him some years back. He is quite skilled in hunting....and always seems to be on his game. Good hunter / conservationist. Great young man....about to be a dad. He is 6 feet tall and about 200+ lbs. How big is this bear? tempImage6ksvt2.pngtempImageyKa9iS.png

I think the switch will pretty well be done for the year soon. Next year it will thicken up and get a 2 month+ earlier start than you had this year. Should be a beautiful and clean stand.
