Fixation Balsana Clover

Native Hunter

5 year old buck +
I didn't even know about this clover until recently when someone on the other forum started a thread on it. It sounded interesting, so I was able to find 5 pounds and plan to experiment with it in the fall.

Anyone here have any experience or suggestions? I will plant with cereal grains like other clover but trying to decide whether to go straight FBS or mix with another clover. Since I have such good luck with chicory here, it would probably be good to add some of that too.

Any thought or suggestions would be welcome since this is uncharted territory for me.

From what they say it is suppose to get very thick and choke out weeds, might have to do a straight planting Check out the discussion here.

Thanks for pointing me to that thread. I thought I remembered one but couldn't find it.

I have the perfect place to try this. It gets wet feet and quite a bit of shade. After refreshing my memory on that thread I'm going to plant it by itself and see what happens.

Will do. If all goes as planned it will go in the ground sometime around Labor Day. Only thing there now is chicory by itself. I messed up when mixing seed and dumped too much chicory and it choked the other stuff out. When I plant the FBC my plans are to disk the chicory hard enough to set it back while the FBC establishes and end up with a good mix of both. You know what they say about he best laid plans of mice and men...lol.

Keep us posted. I am hoping to use this stuff on some new plots that only have atv access. It seems to good to be true.

It will get a good test at this spot. The soil is not nearly as good as it is at my other plots, and there is a good sized spot where water can pool a couple of inches deep for a day or two after a rain. But at another spot in the plot a few feet away it can get really dry at times because of tree roots close by. If it does good here it should do good at most places - except maybe for sand. I don't have any experience with sandy soil.

Only thing I plan on adding to it is a few peas and maybe some oats for a little fall attraction. I sure as heck won't add any more chicory.

I might as well tell you the mistake I made. This is 1/2 acre. I already had the right amount of chicory seed in my mix and accidentally dumped in another bag that was enough to cover a whole acre. So I put 1.5 acres worth of chicory seed on 1/2 acre. Did I mention I have a monoculture of chicory now.:D

Not horrible, I love chicory.

I absolutely love it too. But, I've noticed how much better it grows mixed with clover shooting the nitrogen to it. If I'm lucky with the Balsana experiment, this could turn out good.
