fishing reports

I am headed out later this morning to see if my fish house survived the high winds. I suspect I will be picking up pieces along shore. I weighted it down with a small and a larger propane tank and an old chisel.

I make a few handmade wooden spearing decoys. There is a tradition, culture of making, using and collecting decoys.

I have cut back on collecting and carving. I just can’t compare to the skills of many others.DD46B68A-467D-476A-8619-BF85BB59F3C4.jpegI converted a walnut gun cabinet that my Mom bought my Dad in the 60’s to a display case for part of my collection.

Red and White are a strong part of Minnesota’s tradition.

I turned thar yellow n pink into the cooper n gold. This should be absolutely game changing. I made the rainbow trout which I wanna try but don't expect much action on it.

Occasionally I have success.

Sandbar can't even get on the ice here in michigan and 50 degrees is on the way. Sounds like you have a wood spearing shack. Let's see a picture.

My fish house has plywood floor and plywood ends. The rest is canvas and was made by the Amish.

I folded it up for the week of Christmas and it is in my pickup, thus no pictures.

I had 8-9 inches of ice and pulled my fish house out and back by hand and foot.

I built a house exactly like that one time about 25 years ago. 4ft wide and 8 feet long. Used a couple of wooden dowels between the 2 plywood ends to keep it propped open. Used it as a fish house and spear house. It worked awesome. Only takes a couple hours to build one.

I'm taking my 9 year old daughter up north Christmas day to go fishing. I plan to drive my truck onto the ice. The spots we want to go haven't had that much snow. I am expecting 12-15" of ice. She has never been spearing. Probably give that a try and see how she likes it.

I hear mixed reports on ice reports due to snow depth on top. I haven’t been that far north this year.

Bill you have been quiet what's new with you?

Waiting for the sun to come back out and warm things up. We're packed up until spring. Sucks too because we have Blue fin tuna have been less than 10 miles off the beach but NOAA closed the season in August because the recreational quota had been met. They closed to the commercial guys in November.

Bill wow can you catch n release or is that frowned upon. I watch wicked tuna and get the quota system.

We can and thought about it but haven't spent the effort. Boats are the hard ground now.

^^^

Cut them up and eat them. I like to spear them right behind the head if possible.

Some people like them fried, some people like them baked, Some people will grind them into patties, some people like them pickled. They make awesome pickled fish. Most guy will spear them and just chuck them out onto the ice until they go home. Sometimes they freeze and it takes a bit to thaw them out. I am not a fan of letting fish freeze before you clean them.

Wonderful eating fish if you don't mind dealing with the Y bone in the fillets or the slime and stink when you clean them. There are copious amounts of small pike in most of the lakes I fish around the deer hunting land. Those smaller ones can be filleted with the Y bones and all if you are pickling them. The bones dissolve out in the pickling process.

Pickled northern is excellent (tasty)!!

Dog I throw them back after 24 inches. I'm not into ddt nor mercury from inland lakes. I am sure to remove the mud vane and scrape all back fat off before fileting and then remove all bones including ribs and y bones. The filets i eat are totally white before eating. The other problem and most won't acknowledge it is that by keeping or spearing larger females it is hurting the fishery. I have released pike 14 16 and 20 pounders and was happy to see the females swim away.

You can spear a pike in the head and it will swim away?! 😧

T max if you read my prior post you would know that I don't take a spear anymore. Its no longer a challenge to me I so enjoy creating decoys to see what colors work the best and see how they react to it. I do use tip ups to catch and release most pike hence the 24 inchers. However I do enjoy catching perch and bluegill with my jig rod
